Your loc routine should make sense for your real life.

Not the internet’s schedule. Not someone else’s routine. Yours.

How often you sweat, what products you use, your scalp needs, your hair density, and even your environment all play a role.

That’s why this conversation is bigger than whether oil is “good” or “bad.” It’s should be more focused on how to pay attention to what your locs actually need.

Before we start calling everything “buildup,” let’s actually talk about what we’re seeing.

Because with locs, it’s not always one thing. Sometimes it’s lint. Sometimes it’s leftover product....and sometimes it's both! Other times, it’s just your hair existing in the real world and picking up little things along the way.

That’s why I wanted to start this series here. Not with panic or any shame. No reason for that. Just with a better understanding of where lint and buildup actually come from so we can be more proactive with our loc care.

I’ve heard the “locs are dirty” conversation way too many times, and honestly, it needs more nuance.

Locs collecting lint or buildup does not automatically mean your hair is dirty.

And as a community, we all know how big this topic is. Lint and buildup can be frustrating, confusing, and sometimes overwhelming once you start trying to figure out what’s actually happening inside your locs.

That’s why I felt like this needed a real deep dive, not a quick surface-level answer.

Locs are structured to hold onto things, which means lint, product residue, fabrics, oils, and everyday particles can get trapped over time. Before we jump straight to detoxes, clarifying shampoos, or restarting, we need to understand where the issue actually starts.

Because once you understand the source, prevention starts to make a lot more sense.

The pink rollers got their solo moment.

After the last round, y’all said pink won...so I tested them again with smaller sections, damp hair, and a little more intention in the wrap.

Did we get closer to Hollywood waves on locs? I think so… but we’re not all the way there yet.

Back to the drawing board, but the next experiment is loading...and I'm thinking slightly different wrap method and a little heat, but not sure 🤔. One of the main struggles has been trying to figure out "uniformity" when it comes to the waves.

Before you restart your locs, I really think you should ask yourself this first:

Is this actually a size issue?

Because sometimes our locs look awkward because they’re still developing. Sometimes we’re comparing them to someone else’s locs. And sometimes we just don’t like the stage we’re in.

But that doesn’t always mean the size is wrong.

What you really need to ask is whether this size aligns with the look, lifestyle, and level of maintenance you want in the long run.

That’s why this is the first part of my restart check. Restarting can take a lot of time, money, and emotional energy...so it’s worth slowing down before making that decision.

I get it. Some stages can feel uncomfortable, uneven, awkward, or just not what you pictured.

But sometimes you’re looking at a temporary stage and making a permanent decision from that place.

Restarting might be the right choice for some people, but it should come from clarity and not panic, comparison, or frustration with the stage you’re currently in.

Because if you restart every time your locs feel uncomfortable, you may never give them the chance to actually settle in.
