Wet fur, curled limbs, a face still pink from birth
Some footage doesn't need narration. This clip of a macaque named Karita holding her newborn is one of those moments, raw and unstaged, filmed in a forest by the channel Real Angkor Monkey.
The baby's fur is still wet and matted, its face and skin carrying the deep pink-red color typical of a macaque only hours old. That tone will lighten and its fur will darken over the coming weeks as it grows.
Across the footage, Karita is shown in two spots, sitting on the forest floor among dry leaves, then perched on a thick tree branch with green foliage around her. In every shot, the newborn stays pressed against her chest, held with one arm, its head tucked in and its limbs curled inward.
The baby occasionally reaches an arm up, toward its own face or toward Karita, while she looks around or down at it. Her face and chest show patches of pink skin, likely a sign of the physical toll of having just given birth.
Real Angkor Monkey documents wild macaques in this forest daily, and describes this particular clip as capturing the real, unscripted time of baby monkeys living in the wild, filmed without disturbing their natural behavior.
The coloring and posture seen here aren't unique to Karita's baby. Newborn macaques generally start life with dark, sparse fur and bright pink skin, and stay in near-constant physical contact with their mothers for the earliest part of their lives, gripping her fur as she moves, feeds, or rests through the day.
