My son was bullied for his looks throughout his freshman year — after summer break, not even his former bullies recognized him, so he did what he'd been planning for months.

My son, Lucas, had always been a cheerful, sweet kid, so when he came home one day talking nonstop about a girl from school, I couldn't help but smile.

He had his first real crush. For weeks, he told me how beautiful she was and found little ways to make her smile. Once, he even spent an entire evening choosing a small gift for her.

Then, one afternoon, Lucas came home looking crushed. I later learned he'd finally told her how he felt, only for her to laugh at his clothes and tell him she'd never date someone who looked like him.

Some boys at school heard about it, and soon they were mocking his clothes, his appearance, and especially his weight.

I never learned how bad it had become because no matter how many times I asked, Lucas refused to tell me everything.

I tried to support him, but I watched my son change. He became quiet, stopped going out, hid inside oversized clothes, and counted the days until freshman year was finally over.

I felt helpless because nothing I said seemed to reach him.

Then summer came, and something shifted.

Lucas began exercising every day, eating healthier, changing the way he dressed, and eventually came home with a completely new haircut. More importantly, I started seeing his confidence and energy return.

I was so relieved to have my old Lucas back that I supported him however I could.

By the end of summer, even I was amazed by how much he'd changed.

But his transformation hadn't been his only goal.

On the first day of sophomore year, Lucas walked right past the same kids who had tormented him for months, and not one of them recognized him.

When Lucas realized they hadn't recognized him, he stopped, slowly turned back toward them, and took a step closer. Then he did the one thing he'd been preparing for all summer. ⬇️
