The bare necessities for a water bear are: * A bit of water * A bit of food * A bit of walking around * A bit of friends * Lots of love? 🥹 This gorgeous water bear is from the Macrobiotus hufelandi group and she was chasing small ciliates that were in the moss sample I collected! When identifying Tardigrades, it’s important to look at the claws, the buccal-pharyngeal apparatus but also the eggs! It’s important to look at the eggshell details to be able to determine the exact species from the Macrobiotus hufelandi group! I did find some eggs but I should’ve taken closer images for precise identification. Macrobiotus usually lay their eggs freely and singly or in small groups. These eggs are usually ornemented, with little spikes on them! They look like a coronavirus 😅 How does one achieve the act of slurping, you may wonder? The mouth of a water bear act as a small straw with a needle in it. The needle, called the stylets, pierce into the animal or plant material and suck the fluid that is inside, after what they chew the cell's content with their muscular pharynx. Being as small as moss piglets means that specialized systems such as respiratory and circulatory systems are not needed. Instead of having lungs to breathe, respiration occurs through the cuticle and oxygen circulation is made possible by the movement of fluids and storage cells in the body cavity. Storage cells look like small bubbles moving around the body and play a major role in nutrient transport and storage of lipids, sugars and pigments from food. Similar to humans and other mammals, water bears are able to store energy and use it when necessary. For example, stored energy can be used for reproduction purposes, like when development and maturation of eggs has come.
