One of the easiest ways Christians dismiss former believers is by saying, “You were never really a Christian. You were just a participant in Christianity.”

But that doesn’t reflect my experience at all.

I was raised up in Christianity for 17 years. I took Christianity seriously because I genuinely thought it was true. To say I was merely a “participant” feels less like an argument and more like an attempt to rewrite my story.

What’s interesting is that Christians often want former believers to respect their testimonies about finding faith, but when someone shares a testimony about leaving faith, suddenly their experience becomes invalid.

Why?

Because acknowledging that sincere believers can grow out of Christianity creates a difficult question: What if some people leave not because they wanted to sin, but because they honestly followed the evidence, their conscience, and their own life experiences?

As a Black man, I also couldn’t ignore the historical reality that Christianity was introduced to many of my ancestors through colonization, slavery, and cultural displacement. So I left. And I didn’t leave Christianity because I never believed. I left because I did believe. I studied it. I lived it. I wrestled with it. And eventually I reached conclusions that no longer aligned with the faith.

Disagree with my conclusions if you’d like. But don’t tell me I never walked the path simply because I chose a different destination.

Can someone truly deconstruct a faith they were never genuinely committed to in the first place?
