“You must be very lost and broken after May 5th…” — May 5th is the anniversary of my grandmother’s passing (11 years ago). Someone intentionally took one of the most painful experiences of my life and used it as ammunition because they didn’t like what I said about Christianity.

And then, after insulting me, questioning my character, telling me I’m trying to fool people, and invoking my dead grandmother to make their point, they end with:

“JESUS LOVES YOU.”

I’m not saying every Christian does this, but whenever I come across this behavior, it is always perpetrated by a Christian. And I have to ask… Do Christians understand how contradictory that looks from the outside?

And BEFORE somebody says, “That’s not a real Christian,” “Don’t judge Jesus by his followers,” “People are imperfect,” or “The Church is a hospital for sinners” — that’s exactly where the problem gets deeper. Obviously, one Christian does not represent every Christian. But when harmful behavior becomes common enough that there is an entire vocabulary of excuses ready to separate Christianity from the behavior of Christians, eventually people start asking what accountability actually looks like…. 🤷🏾‍♂️
