Afropunk is a music and culture festival rooted in Black alternative, punk, rock and DIY culture. It grew out of James Spooner’s 2003 documentary Afro-Punk, and its first official festival was held in Brooklyn in 2005.
In Atlanta, Afropunk ran at 787 Windsor for four consecutive years, from 2016 through 2019, bringing Tyler, The Creator, SZA, Solange, Willow Smith, N.E.R.D, The Internet, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, FKA twigs, Brittany Howard, Danny Brown, Big Freedia and Noname to the city. It hasn’t returned to Atlanta since.
A Threads post asking, “What happened to Afropunk in Atlanta? What happened to Afropunk period?” drew about 19,622 views and a comment section full of nostalgia and debate. Some commenters remember a shift from free gatherings to ticketed events, VIP areas, higher prices and lineups moving away from punk. Those are opinions shared in the thread, not confirmed reasons.
The documented ownership timeline: Essence Ventures took a 49% stake in 2018 and majority control in 2020 following litigation. Our article does not claim this explains why Atlanta’s edition stopped, or that there is one single reason.
Afropunk has continued elsewhere: Brooklyn’s AFROPUNK BLKTOPIA in 2024, Bahia/Salvador, Brazil in 2025, and a Rio de Janeiro edition announced for 2026.
