As a Black family celebrated, a couple drove past waving Confederate flags, shouting threats, and deliberately frightening both children and adults.

Prosecutors argued the act was not random — it was intentional intimidation meant to spread fear. A Georgia judge agreed.

Jose “Joe” Torres was sentenced to 20 years, with 13 years in prison, after the court identified him as the primary aggressor.
Kayla Norton received a 15-year sentence, including six years behind bars and the remainder on probation, reflecting her lesser — but still criminal — role.

Judge William McClain ruled the conduct constituted a hate crime, stressing that targeting a family — especially children — crossed a clear and unforgivable line.

The court’s message was unmistakable: intimidation cloaked as symbolism can carry real prison time.
