“Over the last 50 years we’ve gotten much better at recognizing the importance of preserving historic buildings, but don’t think as much about preserving the intangible heritage of communities—things like oral traditions, performing arts, and neighborhood rituals. Similarly, we acknowledge that a sustainable future must include green design, but we don’t talk about how honoring the history and cultural relevance of certain places is also key to sustaining communities. It’s time for developers and preservationists to do more than preserve buildings; we must also work to maintain the cultural identity of the places we are redeveloping.”

We recognize the importance of preserving historic buildings, but don’t think as much about cultural preservation, the intangible heritage of communities.

“Then it started to grow. Others started getting ownership of this vision,” he said. “You could see the public falling in love with it. That led to political support.”

Atlanta columnist Bill Torpy profiles Ryan Gravel, the visionary whose Georgia Tech master's thesis became the blueprint for the Atlanta Beltline.

This week we reflect on this incredible milestone while looking to the future. Tag your early Atlanta Beltline memories and don’t forget to share your ideas for our I-285 challenge. Deadline 12/3.

The vision that Gravel and neighborhood leaders began creating two decades ago included components the BeltLine has not yet delivered: a transit system, abundant affordable housing, and inclusiveness for all the intown communities that made the project possible in the first place.
