The axolotl is a type of amphibian, specifically a neotenic salamander. Unlike many amphibians that undergo metamorphosis, the axolotl remains in its larval form throughout its life.
- Habitat: Axolotls are native to lakes underlying Mexico City, particularly Lake Xochimilco. They are fully aquatic and live in water throughout their lives.
- Appearance: They are known for their distinct, feathery external gills, which are prominent and pink in most specimens. Axolotls come in various colors, including wild-type (dark with speckling), albino, leucistic (pale pink with dark eyes), and other color variants.
