Furloughed federal workers may not be eligible for back pay after the government shutdown, according to a memo circulated by the White House.

The memo appears to contravene the 2019 “Government Employee Fair Treatment Act,” signed by Trump, and it paints a cloudy economic picture for the 750,000 federal workers currently under furlough.

With Senate Democrats holding out for an extension on Obamacare subsidies, Trump and allies in the White House are using the threat of further culling the federal workforce to force them to support the GOP’s clean continuing resolution.

A teacher at MacArthur Elementary School in Long Beach, California, is under fire after being accused of sending a photo depicting a Black child with an ankle monitor to a group chat with fellow educators.

The photo allegedly refers to special education students who sometimes wander from class or school grounds, according to KTLA.

John Solomon, who also serves as secretary of the Teachers Association of Long Beach union, has maintained that his phone was hacked and that he did not send the message. However, a three-person commission tasked with investigating the incident said it found no credible reason to believe the text did not originate from him.

The Trump administration has directed schools in two Florida counties to terminate a program designed to support Latino students, citing concerns about racial discrimination.

“Latinos in Action” courses in Seminole and Broward Counties will be replaced by a new program called “Leaders in Action,” designed to promote leadership and service among all students.

The Department of Education’s federal directive aligns with a spring order to end diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and race-based admissions.

According to NASA, a supermoon will take over the sky today, Oct. 6.

Supermoons happen when a new moon or a full moon is at its closest to Earth all month. Because of that, the moon will look 30% brighter and up to 14% larger than it usually does.

The full moon will be at its peak on Monday, Oct. 6, at 11:47 p.m. ET. The best time to see the moon is when it is at its peak, but it will appear full for all night and even for a couple of days after.

A trio of scientists, two of them American, have won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries concerning the human immune system.

Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi will share the nearly $1.2 million prize for discoveries that “launched the field of peripheral tolerance, spurring the development of medical treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases,” the Nobel Assembly said.

Together, the trio’s discoveries lay a crucial foundation for understanding another way our immune system keeps itself in check, known as peripheral tolerance — a key to understanding why some people suffer from certain autoimmune diseases while others don’t.

Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports color commentator Mark Sanchez, who was arrested for multiple misdemeanors following a physical altercation this weekend, is now facing a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury.

Early Saturday morning, Sanchez allegedly approached a 69-year-old truck driver in a hotel loading dock and “escalated a dispute about the victim’s parked vehicle,” according to police and prosecutors. Sanchez allegedly climbed into the truck and kept the driver from calling for help before a fight broke out, leading to Sanchez being stabbed.

The sentence for the felony charge could be one to six years.

Gen Z-led protests are making waves from Africa to Asia, and while the issues spurring them are different, the symbol they’re using is the same: a grinning skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat.

The flag comes from a long-running Japanese anime and manga series called One Piece, about a rag-tag band of pirates fighting an oppressive world government.

“In addition to entertainment, the Straw Hat pirates symbolize freedom, liberty - the spirit that you have to oppose the unjust authority. That really inspired me,” says a 23-year-old protester from Nepali.

Amid ongoing protests and clashes between agents and demonstrators, federal agents shot a woman in the Brighton Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest Side Saturday morning after they became boxed in by vehicles.

Chicago woman Marimar Martinez, 40, was charged with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer. Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, 21, faces the same charges.

The news comes as activists, residents, and leaders say increasingly combative tactics used by federal immigration agents are sparking violence and fueling neighborhood tensions in the nation’s third-largest city.

Children across the country are being removed from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) as part of an unwinding process happening nationwide in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, just over 6 million children have been removed from Medicaid/CHIP between March 2023 and June 2025.

Millions more children, and adults, are expected to lose Medicaid coverage because of new federal policies as well, following the passage of President Donald Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill.’

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been sentenced in federal court. He will serve 4 years and 2 months in prison following his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, each of which carried a maximum sentence of 10 years.

The sentencing comes months after a jury acquitted him of racketeering and s*x trafficking but found him guilty on the lesser charges.

The final decision was handed down today by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian in New York.

This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that ICE will have a presence at the 2026 Super Bowl, where Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny is set to perform the halftime show.

The announcement seemed to be a pointed attack at the Puerto Rican artist, but considering Puerto Rico has been a US territory since 1989, his attack on Bad Bunny holds no weight.

Regardless of whether or not Bad Bunny decides to continue with his Super Bowl plans or if conservatives fulfill their claims about ICE’s presence, the discourse online, particularly the outrage amongst one specific side, proves that some people really didn’t pay attention during geography lessons.

Young people are taking to the streets en masse in cities around the world in an effort to fight against perceived government corruption, staging contentious protests that have sparked violent clashes with authorities and, at times, turned deadly.

A group called “Gen Z 212,” a reference to the Morocco’s telephone code, launched the protest movement last weekend with social media posts demanding better schooling and healthcare.

Spanning countries in Africa, Asia, and South America in recent weeks, the so-called “Gen Z” protests have been motivated by a variety of grievances directed at government leadership, from severe shortages of water and power in Madagascar to limited access to education and healthcare in Morocco to corruption scandals in Nepal and Peru.
