An Indiana man who reportedly tried to kill himself after he allegedly shot a woman who tried to end their relationship was arrested for murder. Steeve Chavannes, 47, was hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. When he woke up to police over his bed asking him what happened, he said “I shot my wife,” according to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime. According to police, Chavannes had a friend drive him to the home of Evelie LaCroix, who had previously made Chavannes leave her home. He had apparently said he wanted to retrieve some of his belongings.
According to police, LaCroix, whose age was not available, had an order of protection against Chavannes.

When the two men arrived at LaCroix’s home on June 28, the friend was met by her daughter, who said that her mother was at work. According to the affidavit, she said she would let her mother know that Chavannes had come by.

As Chavannes’ friend drove him away from the home, he told his friend to stop the car and let him out so he could walk back. Plainfield police said that the friend, who agreed to be interviewed, told them that he called his own girlfriend to tell her what was happening. She reportedly told him to go back to the apartment because she believed Chavannes “was going to return to the apartment to fight with Ms. LaCroix.” Before he drove back, the friend checked the trunk of his car, where he kept his gun — a fact that Chavannes knew, the friend told police.

When he opened the trunk, his gun was missing. The friend told police that Chavannes must have taken it out while he spoke to LaCroix’s daughter.

According to the affidavit, LaCroix’s daughter told police that she had lied to Chavannes’ friend about her mother being at work; LaCroix had been sleeping before going to work and had asked her daughter to wake her up at a certain time. Not long after Chavannes and his friend came to the home, LaCroix’s daughter said that she heard a “pop and then glass breaking.” She then heard a second pop and her mother screaming.
After a third pop, the screaming stopped.

Lindsey Davis and MacQuell Davis Jr. brought their infant son to the hospital with 11 rib fractures and bleeding from the eyes — blaming it on him being “gassy” and his car seat being tight, cops say. The post Parents brought ‘gassy’ baby to hospital, doctors discovered 11 fractured ribs and bleeding eyes that couple blamed on car seat: Two parents in Indiana are facing criminal charges after bringing their 2-month-old son to the hospital with 11 rib fractures and bleeding from the eyes, which they tried blaming on him being “gassy” and his car seat being too tight, according to cops.

Lindsey Davis, 34, and MacQuell Davis Jr., 30, have both denied having any knowledge of their son’s injuries before they were discovered in X-rays and exams by doctors, the local ABC affiliate WEHT reports, citing police and Department of Child Services officials. Evansville Police say the 2-month-old was taken to a hospital on April 21 for his alleged gas and was kept there for several days. His injuries appeared to have been suffered approximately one week before he arrived, per WEHT.

Police say the child had fractured five ribs on his right side, six on his left.

Lindsey Davis allegedly admitted to investigators that she spotted blood in the boy’s eyes about a week before taking him in, but she kept him at home and didn’t do anything to address it. Two other children were said to be living with the couple at the time, and Lindsey Davis allegedly told police one of them had also experienced similar symptoms when they were younger and was fine. According to EPD officials, Lindsey Davis claimed during her police interview that she believed her son’s injuries could have been caused by his car seat being too tight.

MacQuell Davis has denied having knowledge of any drops or accidents involving the child. A medical report for the infant listed his injuries as being inflicted or the result of physical abuse.

Charges have been filed against both parents for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. They are being held on $25,000 bonds at the Vanderburgh County Jail. Their children have been placed in the care of a family member.

Georgia teachers, parents face new cell phone law

Law restricts student phone use in elementary, middle public schools……
There’s anxiety already as public school students face a return to school under a new law restricting cell phones.
Georgia teachers’ groups were among the backers of the House bill signed into law that will restrict students from kindergarten to eighth grade from accessing cell phones during school hours. Students in middle schools will likely have the biggest adjustment to the new law.
“I believe it’s going to get a lot of pushback,” said Da’shawn Catron, a 16-year-old Atlanta public school student, “because kids are so accustomed to having their cell phones and to say that it’s now a law to say they can’t have their cell phones, I don’t think it’s going to work.”
Catron is now a high school student.
The new law restricts cell phone use in schools for students from kindergarten through eighth grade and subjects violators to school sanctions, rather than criminal penalties. The bill implies that teachers will have to give the law its enforcement teeth. “Technology has affected day-to-day function in classrooms. They are a distraction,” said Ronald Allen, a middle school Georgia history teacher who recognizes the problems cell phones cause in classrooms. Yet, Allen said he’s uneasy about having to be the new law’s enforcer.
“We are spending so much classroom instruction time being enforcers of rules and procedures,” Allen added.
Kenneth Riddick’s 14-year-old would lose access to her cell phone during middle school. Riddick expects students to still take their phones to school but keep them mostly out of sight, and get some flexibility in the enforcement of the new law.
“I understand the law, but I don’t think there should be any discipline with communicating with a parent if need be during school time,” Riddick said. “I am uneasy because I want my child to be accessible if I need to access her.”
The new law will not ban access to cell phones. It will merely restrict students through eighth grade from accessing their cell phones starting with the first bell at school to the dismissal bell at the end, giving them access before and after.

MAN INJURED IN EARLY MORNING STABBING AFTER DISPUTE IN ATLANTA NEIGHBORHOOD……
Early morning unrest at 65 Alabama Street SW resulted in a man sustaining a stab wound. The incident, which occurred on July 13th, unfolded as officers responded to a call at approximately 4:13 AM. They discovered a 32-year-old male with a stab injury to his abdomen, who, while not alert, was conscious and breathing at the time of their arrival, according to the Atlanta Police Department report.

The victim was swiftly transported to a local hospital to receive necessary medical attention.

As the primary investigation got underway, it seemed that the stabbing was the outcome of a physical altercation that went too far, as reported by the Atlanta Police Department.

Currently, the investigation into the stabbing continues as investigators delve into the specifics of the incident. The names of any potential suspects or additional witnesses present during the dispute have not been released by authorities, as per the Atlanta Police Department.

What the agreement on reviewing police use of deadly force means……..
An agreement between the Atlanta Citizen Review Board and the Atlanta Police Department comes in the wake of nearly six months of talks on how to address findings by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the board had failed to open even one investigation of police shootings and custody deaths between 2020 and 2024. What has changed? A new agreement requires Atlanta police to promptly notify the city’s independent citizen board that deadly force cases are ready to review.

Who does this agreement affect? Police officials are now required to let the board know within 24 hours that cases are closed by police internal affairs or that an officer has been cleared of criminal charges by the district attorney’s office.

Does the agreement have any teeth? The agreement, slated to go into effect immediately, is expected to become part of the police department’s manual so officers can be disciplined for failing to follow the 24-hour rule. What does this agreement fix? An AJC investigation found that nearly four dozen cases languished when the independent board failed to open investigations. Its executive director, Lee Reid, claimed the police had failed to notify him that cases were ready.

What role is the citizen board supposed to play? The City Council expanded the board’s powers in 2020 to provide an independent review of all cases in which police allegedly exerted deadly force to citizens. The board has the power to recommend discipline and training to the police chief to avoid similar cases in the future.

Good Samaritan jumps in to help officer wrangle gunman to the ground along Peachtree Street….
Police always ask the public, if you see something, say something.

One man didn’t just say something, he jumped in to help stop a gunman an officer was struggling to place under arrest.

Marquez Burnette showed Channel 2’s Tom Jones how it all unfolded and how he ended up putting his life in danger to make sure an officer went home alive that day.
“So, I’m running over this way. I’m chasing him,” Burnette said, showing Jones where he ran to assist the officer in downtown Atlanta on July 11, around 3 p.m.
He ran over to help even though he knew it was an extremely dangerous situation.
“We’re both grabbing for the gun. I mean, it’s a struggle for life,” Burnette said.
The officer’s body-worn camera shows up close the danger on both of their faces. In the video, you can see the gun that the officer and Burnette are struggling to get out of his hands.

“Let it go,” you hear either the officer or Burnette scream at the gunman, as they roll on the ground,

Burnette said he didn’t think twice about jumping in to help arrest the suspect.

He said he even punched him, “and kind of like put my knee and my elbow in his head while the officer tried to handcuff him.” It all began after Burnette said he saw a man waving a gun at someone he knew on Peachtree Street near the Metro Diner.

He saw an officer nearby and tapped on his window.
“I said, ‘Hey, he’s got a gun,’” Burnette said. Burnette started recording when the officer began chasing the gunman.

“I started recording, but I was recording in case somebody got shot,” Burnette said. In his video, you see the officer try and grab the gunman. The gunman takes off running. And so does Burnette.
Burnette dropped his phone. But the officer’s bodycam recorded the struggle to get the gun from the man and get him handcuffed. After about a minute or so, and the suspect is in custody, the officer approached Burnette.

Atlanta rapper Young Dro set to host 11th annual back-to-school giveaway. No stranger to inspiring others, popular Atlanta hip-hop artist and community leader Young Dro is gearing up to host his 11th annual back-to-school giveaway.

Young Dro, whose real name is Djuan Hart, is best known for his classic hits and uplifting his Georgia community. The annual giveaway is scheduled Tuesday, July 22 at the Salvation Army Bellwood Boys and Girls Club at 777 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy. in Atlanta beginning at 1 p.m.

“After the milestone of 10 years, it feels like the beginning again because the work never stops,” he said. “It gives me fresh new ideas to tackle the next 10 better than I did the first 10. I’m excited.”

The It Still Takes a Village co-founder has always been outspoken about uplifting the community.

Young Dro says this year, many people are volunteering.

“You don’t have to ask people to help, they’ll ask you how to help, that’s what makes it special this year,” he said.

In addition to giving away school supplies, Young Dro says organizers will be leaving positive affirmations and gift cards inside backpacks this year. “It’s stuff to give them hope in different areas of their lives,” Young Dro said. “I know these kids. To continue to have it there shows how sincere Dr. Ciara Elle and I are about where we come from and making things look different. Creating hope, opportunities and resources from that same area until we get better results on an overall scale.”

Young Dro says he hopes to own a Boy’s and Girls Club in the future.

“For them, I’ll do this kind of work and make sure where I’m from, I make the most impact and its going to start there,” he continued. “I know this area and I know what it takes. Let me be clear, if I had $360 billion, I would try to save the entire neighborhood. I have to do the small steps, and I know what it takes because I’ve experienced in that area.”
He is focused on living in his purpose.
