A popular girl told my bullied grandson his painting had been chosen for the featured wall at the school art show — but when she tried to humiliate him on opening night, he opened a sealed folder with the principal's signature on it.

My grandson Rory was sixteen, quiet, kind, and painfully used to being laughed at. I've raised him since his parents couldn't.

He was the boy who painted alone in the art room at lunch. The boy other kids called "paint freak" because he loved old landscapes more than anything on a screen. The boy who came home some days with his sketchbook pages torn out.

Every time I offered to call the school, Rory begged me not to.

"Grandpa Hollis, please. It only makes it worse."

So when Sloane Whitaker, one of the most popular girls in his grade, told him the art committee had chosen his painting for the featured wall, I didn't know what to feel.

Rory lit up in a way I hadn't seen in over a year.

He reworked the painting until it was perfect. He pressed his good shirt himself. He asked if his hair looked okay, and that nearly broke my heart, because he hadn't cared about anything at that school in months.

But on opening night, something felt wrong.

Sloane and her friends kept glancing at Rory, phones angled his way, whispering behind their hands. Rory didn't notice. Or he noticed and chose hope anyway.

An hour in, my phone buzzed. A message from another parent.

"Get to the art show. Something's happening to Rory."

When I arrived, the gallery was packed. Sloane stood by the featured wall with a microphone, Rory beside her, looking confused.

Then Sloane grinned at the crowd and said, "Did you really think we picked your painting because it's good? It was a joke."

My grandson's face went white.

I started toward them, but Rory raised one hand to stop me.

Then he walked to the front, reached into his bag, and pulled out a sealed folder with the principal's signature across the flap.

When he opened it and read the first line, the entire gallery went silent.

"I keep blaming myself. I knew I shouldn’t have let her walk there alone that night. It didn’t seem far, but something inside me told me not to. If only I had listened."

My daughter, Stasy wanted to walk just five houses down to her friend Chloe’s place. It’s a quiet suburban street.

"Text me the second you step on her porch," I told her.

She rolled her eyes, gave me a quick hug, and walked out.

It was ONLY five houses. I could literally see Chloe’s roof from my front steps.

But then my hosting duties took over. Pouring wine, catching up with old friends, laughing. Twenty minutes PASSED. Then forty. My phone remained dead silent. I kept staring at the screen, but there was nothing.

*She just forgot to text,* I told myself, trying to suppress the cold anxiety clawing at my chest.

*Don't embarrass her.*

Finally, at the one-hour mark, my stomach did a sickening flip. I stepped away from the party, walked out onto the dark, humid porch, and dialed Chloe’s mom, Dora.

She answered, her voice polite but confused. I apologized for calling so late and asked if the girls were being too loud.

There was a long, suffocating SILENCE on the other end.

Then, Dora spoke the words that made my blood run absolutely ice-cold: "Maddie... what are you talking about? Chloe is at sleepaway camp in Maine. Stasy was NEVER expected here tonight."

In that moment, it hit me just how badly I’d messed up. I couldn’t afford to lose another minute. I had to find my daughter before it was too late.

A popular boy told my bullied foster daughter she'd been chosen to anchor the regional quiz bowl final — but when he tried to humiliate her in front of the whole auditorium, she opened a sealed folder with the principal's signature on it.

My foster daughter Amara was fifteen, quiet, kind, and painfully used to being laughed at.

She was the girl who ate lunch in the empty science room reading about stars. The girl other kids called "space case" because she loved astronomy more than gossip. The girl who came home some days with her cardigan buttons torn off.

Every time I offered to call the school, Amara begged me not to.

"Miss Delia, please. It only makes it worse."

So when Grayson Pike, one of the most popular boys in her grade, told her the coach had picked her to anchor the regional quiz bowl final, I didn't know what to feel.

Amara lit up in a way I hadn't seen since she came to live with me.

She studied every night until her eyes ached. She pressed her good cardigan herself. She asked if her hair looked okay, and that nearly broke my heart, because she hadn't let herself want anything in months.

But on the night of the final, something felt wrong.

Grayson and his friends kept glancing at Amara, phones angled her way, whispering behind their hands. Amara didn't notice. Or she noticed and chose hope anyway.

An hour in, my phone buzzed. A message from another parent.

"Get to the auditorium. Something's happening to Amara."

When I arrived, the room was packed. Grayson stood at the podium with a microphone, Amara beside him, looking confused.

Then Grayson grinned at the crowd and said, "Did you really think the coach picked you because you're smart? It was a joke."

My girl's face went white.

I started toward the stage, but Amara raised one hand to stop me.

Then she walked to the podium, reached into her bag, and pulled out a sealed folder with the principal's signature across the flap.

When she opened it and read the first line, the entire auditorium went silent.
