“I’LL PAY YOU A MILLION IF YOU CAN CURE ME,” THE BILLIONAIRE SNEERED—UNTIL THE CHILD SIMPLY REACHED OUT AND TOUCHED HIM. Alexander Harrington, once powerful and feared, now sat paralyzed beneath a sycamore tree, loathing the chaos of a Sunday park. Children’s laughter grated on him. Their freedom reminded him of everything he’d lost. When a group of kids pretended to be doctors nearby, Alexander sneered. “Everyone d**s. Especially if you treat people as badly as you dress.” Silence fell—except for one boy who didn’t back away. “Do you want to get better?” he asked, clutching a red plastic stethoscope like it was real. “You?” Alexander mocked. “The best hospitals couldn’t help me. You think you can—for a cookie?” “No,” the boy replied calmly. “For a million dollars. If you walk after I treat you, you pay. If not—nothing.” Intrigued, Alexander allowed it. “You have to trust me,” the boy—Luke—said. “That’s the rule. Let me do my ritual. Don’t laugh. Don’t interrupt. Just… trust.” Luke pulled a shoebox from his backpack—ribbons, a stone, an old photo. He placed them carefully on the grass, murmured softly, moved his hands deliberately. Then, he placed his warm hand on Alexander’s. “It’s done,” he said. “Tomorrow you’ll walk. Don’t forget the million.” Without fanfare, Luke packed up and walked off, vanishing into the trees and crumbling buildings beyond the park. One of the guards burst out laughing. “Brilliant. Didn’t even try.” Alexander laughed too, but a sense of unease lingered. That night, back home in his sterile, high-tech bed, he drifted off in his usual grim mood. Then came the pain.
