*In Today’s Gear Spotlight:* We’ll be taking a look at the KP3 Kaoss Pad, the third incarnation in the Kaoss Pad family. For those unaware, the Kaoss Pad is an effects unit controlled by a touch-pad. It strives to let the user really feel their manipulation of the audio. Intended mainly for live performances, the Kaoss Pad’s four sample banks make for lots of flexibility. You’d maybe want another sequencer running the show, but everything from clock sync to using the XY pad as a midi controller is there. Primarily an effects device, there’s okay variety, even if they sometimes sound uninspired. The delays and such don’t exactly stir the heart, but the stutter and glitch effects paired with the tactile feel of the trackpad make for some very natural output. One can preload samples and loops onto the KP3, letting one have an entire set on the device. Considering the position the ‘Pad has on my table, it makes for a very good tap tempo device. Another great feature is its ability to “record” and loop gestures you make on the pad. If you beat box, it’ll likely change your world. It has one major downside: its analog to digital/digital to analog converters seem to have incredibly poor performance. The out signal can sound very degraded. I still have my KP3 front and near-center, but running a single track coming out of the ‘Pad just isn’t great. It is quite fantastic for textures and motion. Taking a melody that needs a little “more” and running it through the unit, layering the original track and the outputted wet track, can bring it to life. Adding stereo effects with a wet/dry mix again can really bring atmosphere and size to a source. It’s a unique, handy, and versatile piece of gear to work with. I really love mine for that added depth and texture it brings.

A nice shot of the N1 ivories. I always recommend a full keyboard in every studio that can afford the space. Mini 25 midi controllers are great to have at hand, but nothing beats a full board.

What’s better than a Moog? Two Moogs, of course! The Moog Slim Phatty and Minotaur make for my ideal analog synth combo. The Slim Phatty takes care of most of your needs and thankfully has a digital midi interface, letting you save your patches and recall them at will. The Minotaur doesn’t have such niceties, but it’s a bass beast that isn’t hard to get thumping.

*In Today’s Gear Spotlight:*
I’ll be talking about one of my favorite guitar pedals of all time, the od808. The od808 is a clean boost pedal, meant to hot rod the signal being sent to a guitar amplifier and get it to be more sensitive and raise the gain level. Originally developed by and popularized further by with many variations, the “tube screamer” became synonymous with boost pedals. I find that most people consider the od808 “just another tube screamer, but pricier.” Well, not all tub screamers are made equal. The ts9 will drive your signal but also create monstrous feedback. The od808 has its feedback, but with amps like the 5150 it brings out this quality that I can’t quite describe. It sounds like the amp has been brought to life, and delivers a level of tone above what another tube screamer boosted amps would. It’s really something you have to both hear and feel. I even keep mine running on the clean channel, as it really helps with the touch sensitivity and responsiveness. I had build me a custom version combined with a dynacomp and it’s just spectacular. The od808 may be about $75 more than other tube screamers, but it’s certainly a head above the crowd.

*In Today’s Gear Spotlight:*
I’ll be taking a look at my trusty Minotaur. This is one of the more affordable synths from the legendary . Although it isn’t as feature packed and is missing full connectivity, it still delivers what it promises to as a bass synth in spades. As with all of their products, it’s an analog synth through and through. It’s also a mono-synth, which should be expected. Its use is narrow only in the sense that it’s a dedicated bass synthesizer, and it sounds MASSIVE. God, this thing shakes the studio and delivers some of the punchiest, fattest bass one could hope for. I do have to note that it’s missing some key connectivity. It doesn’t have a midi out or thru, which can be a pain in the ass if you’re daisy chaining all of your midi controllers. It feels like expected its primary use to be via USB, as it normally comes in a desktop-box-style enclosure. 19” rack wings are available, fitting it in a 3u package (as pictured here). It has the CV ins/outs you’d think it would, but not the full suite you’d hope for. In closing, it’s not as versatile as other synthesizers, but plays its roll very well. It’s also missing some of the connectivity you’d hope for. The trade-off is that it’s dirt cheap relative to their other products. You can’t expect it to have everything at this price point (but no midi out??).
