What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelly to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy - a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices, more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour. - FREDRICK DOUGLAS

Louisiana rapper C-Murder is on a hunger strike to protest COVID-19 protections in Louisiana prisons.

C-Murder’s real name is Corey Miller and the rapper is behind bars in the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center.
Well now, C-Murder is being represented by two lawyers named Benjamin Crump and Ronald Haley Jr.

Attorneys Crump and Haley Jr. are saying that, “the Louisiana Department of Corrections and the warden of Elayn Hunt are not enforcing mask mandates or requiring correctional officers to get vaccinated despite the fact that people who are incarcerated continue to endure some of the worst conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the lack of social distancing practices, not getting access to proper hygiene and disinfectants, and not receiving adequate medical care.”
The national civil rights attorneys believe that not enough is being done to protect the inmates.

Benjamin Crump and Ronald Haley Jr. released this statement:
“No one in the State of Louisiana is sentenced to contract COVID-19 nor die from it. There are far too many people who are unreasonably compromised due to existing medical conditions and older age who will suffer or die due to the spread of COVID-19 and the Delta variant. There is no form of justice that should allow this level of neglect for the health and safety of those who are incarcerated.
“Mr. Miller maintains his innocence and we are diligently working with his legal defense team to free him, but In the meantime, we are monitoring the conditions at Elayn Hunt and are considering taking legal action.

“We stand with Mr. Miller and everyone who is incarcerated who are in fear of losing their lives due to the pandemic and inhumanity of the correctional system. We demand that the Department of Corrections act immediately.”

Corey “C-Murder” Miller is protesting against the medical neglect he and other inmates at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana have experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to C-Murder, inmates are confined to their cells all day and are prohibited from leaving to get fresh air. The COVID-19 tests — which are allegedly “not up to standard” — give inaccurate results, and those with preexisting conditions, ailments and terminal illnesses have passed away upon contracting the virus. The deaths, the rapper claims, are mainly due to lack of necessary treatment.

On Wednesday (Aug. 4), C-Murder announced that he’s going on a hunger strike until the inmates’ desires are met.
