Atlanta had something to prove. And by the end of the World Cup, the conversation had changed.
Before the first match, our comments were full of people asking who would come, whether Atlanta was ready and whether the whole thing would become a mess.
Then the matches started.
The stadium stayed packed. Centennial Olympic Park became a meeting place for the world. MARTA moved people. Fans noticed the prices, the downtown location, the atmosphere, the greenery - and the city beyond the stadium. Some visitors who arrived skeptical even came back online to admit Atlanta had won them over.
Atlanta didn’t prove it was perfect. It proved it was capable. For a few unforgettable weeks, downtown felt like the center of the soccer world. That’s not even mentioning the unforgettable matches in the Benz.
This took organizers, stadium staff, volunteers, transit workers, local businesses, corporations, public-safety teams and, most importantly, the fans who showed up and brought the city to life.
So, how do you think Atlanta did? And now that it’s over, will you miss this special time as much as we will?
