Happy 79th, Colonel. We miss you.
Nine years ago and a day, the Fox Theatre was filled with musicians, music-lovers, and pure joy — all there to celebrate the one and only Col. Bruce Hampton.
Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi-Trucks, John Bell, Jon Fishman, Johnny Knapp and more delivered a concert for the ages. "I'm So Glad" closed the set. And then the encore — Col. Bruce's favorite, Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Turn On Your Lovelight."
And then — something no one in that room will ever forget.
Col. Bruce directed the solo toward the youngest player on stage, Brandon "Taz" Niederauer, and laid down at his feet. Time stood still. The band played on. And we lost him.
Turner and Seth had been interviewing musicians all day. They knew what they had. Rob stayed up all night combing through the audio, marking every meaningful moment. He and Josh Thane arranged it. Turner and Seth sat together, cut the segments, and let their emotions flow.
What resulted was a special episode — and a sequel released one year later.
If you were there — or even if you weren't — take some time today and listen. These ones matter.
