The Southern Playas are a platinum-selling rap group from Augusta, Georgia, best known for their mid-90s bass music hit, “Dickey Ride.” Comprised of BJ Bowman, Troy Johnson, and Cantrelle Lopez, the group quickly built a loyal fan base with their high-energy performances and signature Southern sound.
Following the success of their debut release, The Southern Playas toured nationally alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Tupac Shakur, MC Hammer, 95 South, Patra, Luke & The 2 Live Crew, Eightball & MJG, and Duice (“Dazzey Duks”), Prince Rahiem Thomas, among many others. Their growing popularity led to recording opportunities with Critique Records, as well as collaborations through Tony Mercedes and LaFace Records.
Their follow-up single, “I Want To Ball,” earned them a featured spot on LaFace Records’ acclaimed bass compilation, “And Then There Was Bass,” further cementing their place in Southern hip-hop history. Throughout their career, The Southern Playas collaborated with notable artists and producers including LA Snow, Kidd Money, Trigger Man, and DJ Nabs of Kris Kross.
Over the years, the group shared stages with legends such as 69 Boyz, Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, Ludacris, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Xscape, Yo-Yo, Craig Mack, and Uncle Luke, continuing to expand their influence across the Southern rap and bass music scene.
Today, The Southern Playas remain an enduring force in hip-hop, consistently releasing new music, videos, and solo projects while preserving the legacy that helped shape Southern bass music. Their impact on the genre continues to be celebrated by fans old and new, solidifying their status as true pioneers and legends of the bass game.
