In this week’s Day1 Classics sermon, Rev. Dr. Edmund Steimle offers a beautiful Advent reminder:

"If we're even half serious about Christmas, we know it's not the destination, it's the promise of new life, new horizons, new beginnings. Because God does not settle down as a child in a manger."

What new beginning might God be opening for you this Advent season?

This week on the Day1 Radio Show and Podcast, a new episode of "Day1 Classics!"

We're excited revisit a powerful Advent sermon from the late Rev. Dr. Edmund A. Steimle of the Lutheran Theological Seminary (now United Lutheran Seminary and Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

In 1970, Steimle preached "High Road in the Wilderness," on what was then called "The Protestant Hour." In this timeless sermon he turns to Isaiah 40:1–5 to explore how God meets us in seasons of silence, uncertainty, and longing.

Steimle invitation for us to reconsider Christmas not as a destination, but as a point of departure toward hope, courage, and a deeper trust in God's presence, is still as relevant as it ever has been.

In this week’s interview, Dr. Diana Butler Bass invites us to reconsider the very structure of how we organize time: “The way we think about the structure of our year is all based on Roman emperors, Roman celebrations, and Roman numerals.”

She reminds us that Christians inherited a different kind of calendar, one rooted in waiting, peace, light, forgiveness, and resurrection. It's a story that runs counter to the one our culture tells.
