In this week’s interview, Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence reflects on how knowing the ending of a story can change the way we read Scripture. As she puts it: “To read Genesis, knowing that Exodus is coming… to read these things knowing that they’re part of a sequence… that, to me, feels important.”

It’s a beautiful reminder during Advent that our faith story has an ending full of hope, and that knowing it reshapes how we walk through the middle.

A reminder that the places we feel stuck are precisely where God begins to move.

“There is a balm in Gilead…”

To illustrate how spirituals bring healing and hope, Rev. Dr. Luke Powery of Duke Divinity School shares a powerful memory of teaching in a federal prison with divinity students and incarcerated students together, where this song became their shared refrain.

If you’ve ever felt unsure about church, or burned out by religion, this conversation between Rev. Dr. Luke Powery of Duke University Chapel and host Rev. Dr. Katie Givens Kime might just meet you where you live.

“Don’t expect something perfect from our Christian community, but it is a place, somehow, that together, we form the Body of Christ. And there’s room, you know... There’s room for everyone.”

It’s not about perfect music, flawless sermons, or hot coffee. It’s about grace, persistence, and finding belonging among other humans.
