In this week’s interview, Dr. Diana Butler Bass invites us to reconsider the very structure of how we organize time: “The way we think about the structure of our year is all based on Roman emperors, Roman celebrations, and Roman numerals.”

She reminds us that Christians inherited a different kind of calendar, one rooted in waiting, peace, light, forgiveness, and resurrection. It's a story that runs counter to the one our culture tells.

This week on the Day1 Radio Show and the Day1 Weekly Podcast, we welcome Dr. Diana Butler Bass, independent scholar and author of the new book "A Beautiful Year."

Her sermon, “The Fullness of Time,” draws from Isaiah 11 v1-10 and Matthew 3 v1-4 to invite us into Advent with a renewed awareness of sacred time. Dr. Butler Bass reflects on endings and beginnings, the ache of loss, and the quiet ways God’s grace unfolds through the seasons of our lives.

In this week’s interview, Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence reflects on how knowing the ending of a story can change the way we read Scripture. As she puts it: “To read Genesis, knowing that Exodus is coming… to read these things knowing that they’re part of a sequence… that, to me, feels important.”

It’s a beautiful reminder during Advent that our faith story has an ending full of hope, and that knowing it reshapes how we walk through the middle.

From this week’s sermon, Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence speaks a word many of us need in this Advent season: “God will turn your paralysis into partnership with the redemptive work of Christ... And don't we all need that?”

A reminder that the places we feel stuck are precisely where God begins to move.

A new Day1 Advent blog post today about a truth Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence names with such clarity: none of us reads Scripture with a blank slate. We know the ending. And that changes everything about how we pay attention to the story God is telling.
