A window that is off by a quarter of an inch does not tell you on install day.

In this episode of Behind The Build, I'm in Monroe, Georgia with Tucker Door & Trim, a two-step distributor that manufactures windows and doors inside a 290,000 square foot facility.

Chris Kotlowski walks us through the entire process of how windows are made at Tucker, from cutting the glass to staging for delivery. Chris shows us the differences in manufacturing processes between their vinyl, PVC, and wood windows. You’ll also see the Billco Manufacturing Inc., GED Integrated Solutions, Inc., and Greller machines that automate tedious tasks and speed up window production.

I rode along on a real delivery and said what most owners never admit out loud.

The driver is the best business card.

Juwan McKnight put it plainly: when something's missing on a job site, he's the first one there.

He has to find the solution, call the store, and get it handled.

Lummus supply co CEO Will Lummus doesn't treat that as a support role.

He told me everybody's the CEO, and the drivers are the CEO of their trucks.

His drivers talk to customers more than he does, and he's leaned into that culture.

Walk into a high-end Atlanta custom home and you'll keep seeing the same window line.

In Alpharetta, at a Crownline Homes build, Kevin Scussel told me Sierra Pacific Windows was the fit because of the capabilities and the size and scope of the house.

Reid Lummus of Lummus supply co said the same thing standing in the showroom.

Trusses are often stacked flat.

Harbin Lumber Company, Inc. stacks them vertically.

I learned why during our tour with Westley Harbin.

When a truss is built, metal plates are slid underneath.

Incorrectly set bottom plates can be easy to miss when the truss is lying down.

Vertical stacking turns each truss upright.

Now the crew can see the underside and check every plate.

Right size, right spot, none missing.

It is a simple quality check with a big payoff.

Problems get caught and quickly fixed before the truss ever sees a jobsite.
