FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT, GEORGIA GOVERNOR, JIMMY CARTER, REMEMBERED | ATLANTA LEADER

ATLANTA, Georgia - The longest living U.S. president, and Nobel Prize winner, Jimmy Carter died this week at the age of 100.

Cartern died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia.

The 39th president of the United States, who succeeded Gerald Ford who stepped in after Richard Nixon's resigation, served from January 1977 to January 2081, and was succeeded by Ronald Reagan.

Jimmy Carter was a small-time peanut farmer, a U.S. Navy veteran, and the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. He became the first president from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democrat elected president between Lyndon B Johnson and Bill Clinton's terms in the White House.

Carter is best remembered for the signing of the Camp David Accords, which led to the first significant Israeli withdrawal from territory captured in the Six-Day War of 1967 and a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that remains to this day.

In recognition of his significant humanitarian efforts, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development," according to the Nobel Prize statement.

According to a statement from The Carter Center, the former president was surrounded by family when he passed at hias home on Sunday.

President Carter is survived by his children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Rosalynn died in November last year.

"My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love," Chip Carter, the former president's son said Sunday. "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs."

There will be public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia. The final arrangements for President Carter's state funeral, including all public events and motorcade routes, are still pending. According to ther Carter Center, he schedule will be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region at https://jtfncr.mdw.army.mil/statefunerals/.
