The father of my future twins mocked me for ordering a $5 COBB SALAD — I stayed quiet, but he didn’t notice who was sitting behind him. I’m 26. When I found out I was pregnant with twins, I thought people would finally treat me gently. I WAS WRONG. My boyfriend, Briggs, loves calling himself a "PROVIDER." What that really means is simple: HE EARNS — I OBEY. I moved in with him when I got pregnant. He promised stability. What I got was control. Briggs grew up poor and never lets anyone forget it. To him, money equals power. If he pays — he owns everything. Lately… that included me. As my belly grew, he dragged me everywhere. Meetings. Warehouses. Errands. I carried boxes. Files. My back screaming. My ankles swollen. Whenever I complained— "YOU WANTED KIDS. THIS IS PART OF IT." The breaking point came on a Tuesday. I hadn’t eaten since the night before. I felt dizzy. "Can we stop somewhere?" I asked. "I’M REALLY HUNGRY." He laughed. "STOP ACTING LIKE A QUEEN. YOU’RE PREGNANT, NOT SPECIAL." We pulled into a diner. I ordered the cheapest thing I could find.
