The Dance of the Dragons did not just decide the fate of the Iron Throne—it brought about the end of the dragons’ golden age. What had once been the greatest symbol of House Targaryen’s power became its greatest loss, as dragon fought dragon across the skies of Westeros. By the war’s end, legendary dragons had fallen, the dragonpit lay in ruins, and only a handful of dragons remained alive.
The survivors were few, and even they would not last. In the years that followed, the last dragons grew smaller, weaker, and eventually disappeared altogether, leaving House Targaryen without the creatures that had built their dynasty. The Dance was remembered as a civil war, but its greatest tragedy was the extinction of the dragons—the very soul of House Targaryen.
