I celebrate my mother Maggie Bowens Freeman All that I am, I am who I am , All I am , all I became because of her. Mrs. Maggie Bowens Freeman, maiden name Maggie Lee “Moochie" Thomas is a pioneer, entrepreneur, youth advocate, and sought after professional. She is associated with numerous Qualitative Psychological researcher field work.
She is the mother of three children and remarried to Mr. Roosevelt Freeman. The founding CEO of the National Coalition of Women of Color in Construction Inc. is the driving force behind the cultivating and sustainability of women of color in penetrating a male dominated world of construction. She was featured in Forbes Magazine in 2012 Special Edition as Georgia’s Green Technology EPA Energy Star Business Partner.
A founding member and sponsor, Mrs. Freeman invested funds to establish the NCWCC Build A Youth program (a former Youth Build USA Provisional Affiliate). The NCWCC Build A Youth’s (B.A.Y) Green Construction Technology, Applied Science, Information Integrated Technology Program has a two-fold mission, 1) to uplift young men from disadvantaged backgrounds, and 2) to explore the new field of green construction. Mrs. Freeman also advocates national community movements through the NCWCC Digital Online Radio Broadcast Network which bring awareness for other groups projects and initiatives.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Freeman fought discrimination against women in construction, and established new roles for women in order to leverage the playing field. She championed economic analysis of women of color entering the construction markets by joining National Research organizations such as Center for Women Business Research (CWBR).
“If you cannot be measured, then you never counted!” This embarked her to create a direct pipeline to the construction industry by working with organizations in Washington, DC, and encouraging complete dialogue surrounding issues that faced women of color in contracting. Mrs. Freeman played a strategic role in hosting the Georgia Summit in Columbus, GA with the U.S Women Chamber of Commerce that brought direct information about the economic growth that impacts the region.
Mrs. Freeman believed in “Timing and Positioning” so in the interim of bringing her legacy forward, she introduced both her daughters to non -traditional career paths early in their lives by starting Bowens Concrete Construction in 1989, in the city of Gary, Indiana . Both girls were exposed to the construction industry by Mrs. Freeman. She entered them into vocational training career paths while in high school. Her daughters were the first black female journeymen to ever graduate out of the Italian dominated Local 502 Cement Mason and Plasters Union. She was completely involved in their progress - advocating for fair treatment, and secured their future by becoming a Signatory Union contractor .
Creating interdependent environments for women of color is Mrs. Freeman’s life goal. She believes that “teaching people to fish fosters a life time of eating”. Her daughters now run the family owned business, CECI Services, with locations in Florida, Atlanta, North Dakota and Chicago. However, since retiring from the Chicago Postal Service, she is still involved the operation of the firm.
Recently parts of Mrs. Freeman life story has been featured in “My Walk Has Never Been Average: black tradeswomen negotiating intersections of race and gender in long-term careers in the U.S. building trades” by Roberta Suzette Hunte, a thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba, in partial fulfillment of Ms. Hunte requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The dissertation was accepted and Dr. Hunte is transcribing it into a play in Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Freeman’s legacy continues!
