On this , we’re sharing our next installment of Chief Insights with Dr. Aileen Johnson! Dr. Johnson attended MIT for her undergraduate studies before earning her medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine, where she also completed her general surgery residency. Next year, she will pursue a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

In this episode, Dr. Johnson discusses her early EMS work, how mentorship guided her path to transplant surgery, and what she gained from three dedicated research years. She also discusses her experience as a woman in surgery, chief year culture, and the importance of showing up prepared, curious, and intentional at every stage.

She attended Albany Medical College before coming to Emory for general surgery residency and her Master of Public Health. She is one of this year’s chief residents and will remain at Emory and Grady Memorial Hospital next year to pursue a Trauma and Critical Care fellowship.

We’re so excited to launch Chief Insights, a new mini-series featuring conversations with female chief general surgery residents at Emory. Through these interviews, we explore their unique journeys in surgery and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

For our first episode of Chief Insights, we are featuring Dr. Olivia Keane! Dr. Keane went to the Medical University of South Carolina for medical school and came to Emory for general surgery residency. She is one of the chief general surgery residents this year and will be staying at Emory and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for pediatric surgery fellowship next year!

Happy   ! We have our first episode of Season 7 out now with Dr. Wendy Greene!

Dr. Greene, Emory University’s first African American female professor of surgery, is a trailblazer in medicine and a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. A founding member of the African American Women’s Collaborative, she has led national DEI efforts, secured a Level I trauma designation at Howard University Hospital, and mentored future surgeons. Recently honored with the Emory Department of Surgery’s Faculty DEI Pioneer Award, Dr. Greene’s leadership is marked by grace, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her guiding mantra, “A bend in the road is not the end of the road, as long as you make the turn,” reflects her resilience and purpose.
