The Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, reported that productions spent $4.4 billion in Georgia during fiscal year 2022. The press release is provided below.

ATLANTA – August 1, 2022 – Governor Brian P. Kemp today announced a chart-topping year for the film and television industry as productions spent $4.4 billion in Georgia during fiscal year 2022 – a new industry record. The Georgia Film Office, a strategic office within the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), reported that the State of Georgia hosted 412 productions, represented by 32 feature films, 36 independent films, 269 television and episodic productions, 42 commercials, and 33 music videos between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

“When the pandemic struck, we worked hard in Georgia to communicate with our partners in the Georgia film, TV, and streaming industries,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “Together, we forged a safe and appropriate path to allow the film industry to return to operations and deliver Georgia Made productions to eager consumers all around the world – even when some states continued to stay shut down and stifle the industry’s return to normalcy. Because of this partnership approach and the resiliency of our state’s film and television infrastructure, which state and local economic development officials have been working for almost fifty years to build, we are once again celebrating incredible growth and investment from industry leaders.”

With the extension of the joint entertainment union COVID-19 protocols until September 2022, and as emerging sub-variants continue to gain traction, it is a timely opportunity to review and update your own protocols and risk management planning.

Modifications to the COVID-19 protocols reflect ongoing changes to the way we learn to live with the disease and ensure continuity of productions wherever they are. In brief, these are:
Meals: Employees who are not fully vaccinated are not permitted self-serve food service that requires sharing of utensils.
Transportation: Production vehicles can now operate at full capacity (previously 75%), with face masks to be worn.
The new COVID-19 sub-variant BA.2.75 ‘Centaurus’
The BA.2.75 variant, nicknamed Centaurus, is rapidly gaining ground in India after first being detected there in May. This new variant is thought to spread at an even faster rate than its Omicron relatives BA.5 and BA.2 variants, and it has now been detected in about 10 other countries including the UK, US, Australia, Germany and Canada.

It is unclear whether it could cause more serious disease than other Omicron variants, but experts say it has a high number of mutations compared to its Omicron predecessors. This means the new sub-variant may be able to circumvent immunity from vaccines and previous infection, and mutations related to the spike protein could allow the virus to bind onto cells more efficiently.

It may take several weeks to get a sense of how the latest Omicron mutant could affect the trajectory of the pandemic. Experts currently maintain that vaccines and boosters are still the best defence against severe infection.

We are truly saddened to hear the tragic, and avoidable accidental shooting on set in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Our hearts are with Ms. Hutchins' family, as well as the entire cast and crew.

The actor was told a gun being used as a prop was safe before he fired it on the set of “Rust,” killing the film’s cinematographer and wounding its director, law enforcement officials said.
