This is how I move my equipment from one wall to the next. Once the poles are stood up, they don’t get lowered until the house is done. I used to lower each pole and stand them back up when moving them from one wall to the next because I was too scared to carry them vertically. It took me 7 years into my career before I got the guts to move them vertically. All it took was commitment and practice. I learned that looking up to makes it harder. You have to just feel where the weight it up top and compensate for it on the ground. For example, if you feel it falling backwards, then take steps backwards so that you regain your balance. Moving poles vertically not only saves time but it actually takes less energy. My poles are about 107lbs, so it’s not too bad. I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and you’re getting some good times in with family. Anyone get anything good for Christmas? . . . . . . . . . . .

I plumbed in a new filter for my pond and extended a pipe (yes that’s the 10’ pvc pipe I found on the side of the road and ran with it for 2 miles back home 😂) outside my house today. I’ve been familiar with PVC cutters for 20 years mainly due to my aquarium hobby. I started out with ones that would cut 1”, then 1.5”, then these ones a couple of years ago that can do up to 2 3/8” OD pipe. I’ve used a hacksaw or sawzall when I didn’t have these available while helping friends out. Though it works, it creates a mess and typically burrs on the cut edge of the pipe. These are cheap enough to warrant having in your household tool selection if you do any plumbing of your own. A word of advice, get the larger sized ones to avoid my mistake of gradually upgrading. They should last you your lifetime if you’re just doing DIY plumbing like myself. I hope this post adds value to you. Thanks for watching. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Just in this video clip alone, I don’t know how much time I saved by not having to lift up the cutter, and put it back in its track to cut only from right to left. I have been using Innovatools cutters for my Vanmark and Tapco brakes for a couple of years now and I can’t go back. The ability to leave it on the brake to bend metal and that it cuts both ways has saved me so much time. This morning I had to bend 8 windows (all of the same profile). I ripped the coil down to the width I needed, then went to town bending. I used the built in tape measure on the brake itself for the length, and the Innovatools just bend gauges for the bending itself. This is one reason I like a permanent shop set up. It is always consistent, level and clean

Siding Removal Tool

Making mistakes is okay, we all make mistakes. Fixing them and knowing how to fix them is what matters. It builds character. I had this bottom portion siding almost all the way to meet the old siding and installed it how I normally would install it

This is how I stand a pole up by myself. You really don’t need people. I like to stand the foot of the pole into the ground first as the first pivot point, then the pivot point changes to the bottom of the pole. What this does is distributes the weight to my advantage, also it will prevent the pole from slipping as this can be done on icy surfaces as well. By the time the pivot point changes from the foot to the bottom of the pole, it is typically vertical enough to prevent slippage. Poles scared me when I first started, but as I handled them more and more now they’ve become second nature. 5 poles can be set up in under 30 mins, dramatically increasing efficiency for installation. . . . . . . . . .

This is one way to cut glass. I’m just a DIYer in this area. I have made a couple of aquariums before. I own a warehouse bay and a glass company rented that space for many years and the owner taught me some tips and trick. That’s just cooking oil in that container for a little bit of lubricant. The glass cutter scores the glass and you really don’t need much downward pressure. Those pliers just help get you started to snap the glass apart. I’ve had the glass cutter and those pliers from a local hobby shop for close to 20 years and every now and again, they come in handy. My wife wanted a glass top for the night stand and I had that scrap glass sitting around. A quick sand of the freshly cut edges and it is safe. I like showing need things so hopefully you like this. If you’re like me, I like to learn new things, so hopefully this is new to you. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This is how I do inside corners on fascia. The key to inside corners in metal work is to have a fold in the piece behind it, and a tab for the bottom mitre so that any overlapping pieces won’t show any gaps. It’s not rocket science, but it’s something I had to learn by trial and error and look at nearby houses to figure it out. I hope that this video will help someone out there who may be doing it for the first time or working on their own DIY project. . . . . . . . . . . . .

I know this isn’t a construction related video, but part of why I started social media was to share things I’ve learned over the years and to hopefully inspire. A muscle up might be really easy for some people, but it seemed really difficult to me. I set this goal for myself at the beginning of 2024 since I’m taking winters off and wanted to stay active so I started doing pull ups about 6 months ago. This was filmed yesterday. My wife and I were at the Rec. center to use the steam room and hot tub. I’ve used a gym less than 5 times in my life as I’ve never been one to workout since I work a physical job. I tried to muscle up multiple times and was close. I finally did my first one and then a random stranger came up to me and said “Dude, that was awesome, I’ve been trying to do that for a long time!”, then he fist bumed me and high fived me. I told him it was my first one ever. I rested for a bit and got my wife to film this clip. Over the years I’ve set random goals for myself. In 2019 I listened to over 300 books, last year I ran over 1200 kms (1000 km was my goal). I wanted to pay off my house before I was 30 years old and made that goal to within a month of my 30th birthday. This year I set some physical goals for myself. The muscle up was one of them. Another goal I’m trying to do is a planche lean (google that). I’ve been watching Instagram videos on “how to” progressions. Do you set goals for yourself? I think that goals keep life interesting and in the end betters yourself. These physical goals in the big scheme of things mean nothing, but it gives me a sense of satisfaction that I’m always learning. I hope this video inspires at least one person. Thanks for watching. Let me know in the comments what goals you have. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Yes I’m standing on the top rung. I I probably wouldn’t have if I didn’t have the on this ladder where my knees had something to lean on. Yes you can lean on that added extension and it’s been strength tested to 230lbs on that extension. It came in handy for me for this job as I didn’t have a taller ladder on me in my vehicle and the job was done safely. I’ve had the ladder rail for over a year and it’s come in handy more than a few times. It’s available from or Amazon (link in my bio - link tree). Yes I do value my health and you may not agree with this but this is just me being me and being honest. . . . . . . .

I used to run my siding business using a truck instead of a van, but for the last 15 or so years I’ve been team van. Though not as “sexy” as a truck, it is much more efficient for me. Loading up some loose supplies like in this video took seconds with nothing to tie down. I can fit 14’ material on the floor easily and 4 x 10’ sheet goods on the floor. In the winter everything in the back stays dry and locked. It’s almost like when you have kids and consider driving a mini-van because of all the benefits but hate to do it because it’s not cool 😂 (I drive a minivan). Have you considered working out of a van instead of a truck? What’s holding you back? . . . . . . . . . . . . .
