This video is all in good fun. I spend a lot of time doing research before posting information online. It’s too bad that the comment section gets out of hand sometimes and false information is presented. Roof slope = rise over run - meaning a 4/12 slope has 4” of rise over 12” horizontally. Mr. Trevor, you requested a special video since you thought the information I presented in my video a couple of days ago was wrong, so here it is. Hopefully it shows an easy way to find the slope of any roof using a speed square with a level. The square will tell you the roof pitch or degrees so that you can easily get a rake angle, say for siding as an example. Thank you Trevor for the idea of a simple way to explain roof slopes and how to determine the angle of a roof. Cheers and thanks for watching. . . . . . . . . . . .

It’s been a while since I worked on a crew - I volunteered to be on this one to help out and hang out. I haven’t been a cut guy in 20 years. I like being a cut guy. As a cut guy you should always be pressuring the nail guy to go faster, feeding them pieces and thinking ahead of them. Unfortunately I’m out of practice so I’m slow, so slow that walked off on me 😂 Do you ever race the nail guy as a cut guy? . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This is how I make the bend on the for the outside corner of fascia. You’ll notice I make a little cut so that when I flip the fascia over to bend it, firstly, I have a mark on the other side, and secondly, the fascia will naturally want to bend at that spot. I’m not sure how others do it, but if you’ve never tried it this way before, give it a shot. . . . . . . .

I’m home after a fun week at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas. I always enjoy finding “new to me” products at trade shows. It was last year at IBS2023 that my wife and I saw the system for the first time and decided to install it on our own home. Here is a snapshot of a few of my “Favorite Finds” from brought to you by : 1 Smart Square Tools carpenter square with jig block - prototype. To be released soon 2 New TapcoTape from - a handy measuring jig for most Tapco brakes 3 Truewerk Storm Shell to be released soon 4 Westlake Royal caramel logo latte - show special only 😉 - it was delicious 5 has introduced a new V-groove profile and three new colors - I hope to install it sometime 6 The Holstery mag master pro I’ll tag the product companies so that you can easily check out their pages. Stay tuned for other cool things I found at the show that didn’t make it in this reel. Thanks for watching! . . . . . . . . . . .

When I saw this pump at the Canadian Concrete Expo a couple of months ago, I didn’t think it could be practical. I thought you’d need a ton of batteries for it to make sense. I stuck a battery on the charger, went and grabbed a quick coffee, when I got back 20 mins later it was almost fully charged. One fully charged battery pumped out 3/4 of my pond, this blew me away. It could have pumped more but I didn’t realize until halfway through that there were a bunch of leaves in the intake. Once I buried it in the gravel it was full flow. This is the quickest and lowest I’ve ever been able to pump my pond out in 13 years. It saved me so much time. I usually use 2 pond pumps. With the large flow rate, it helped in washing out the leaves from the nooks and crannies of the rocks. This pump is perfect for commercial sites where there’s no power, or if power is far away from the flood area. One battery will last a long time and it’s good to know it’s a quick charge. Battery technology has come so far. It amazes me. What do you think of battery operated industrial tools like this pump, tampers, and concrete power trowels? . . . . . . . . . . .

It’s a blessing to be able to collaborate with Keen Utility. I wore Keen Utility boots well before we started working together, so it was a very natural fit since I liked their products already. The Kenton safety shoe was inspired by skateboarding shoes. Though NOT meant for skateboarding, I had a good session skateboarding with them today. They are designed for the warehouse worker for all day comfort, and they look great. Even though this shoe is a new launch for the Keen Utility team, I can attest to the comfort of the ReGen soles. I wear the Sparta2 ESD daily (which have the ReGen soles); they’ve got the most miles on them in the past 14 months aside from my running shoes. I’ve walked 3 trade shows in them and plan to walk a couple more in them. My Red Hook work boots (also with ReGen soles) are 2.5 years old and still going. I like the look of the Kenton as I used to wear skates shoes for siding in the summer. What do you think of this new launch? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

There are always many ways to get the same end result. I’ve shown finding a similar angle with a gauge, using a scrap piece, using a tape measure, using a template and using the slope of the roof. This is another simple method. I pick and choose what method I use based on the length of the piece and what I have readily available. If you haven’t seen this method before, I hope that it helps you out and adds value to you. I know I used a level 😂, it was the closest straight edge around - you can use any straight edge, even another scrap piece of siding . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I was recently in a store and saw this. I had so many questions going through my mind. “Why is this in the middle of the floor?” “Couldn’t they have at least installed it straight?” “How did this even pass acceptable quality?” Being in the trades, we’re all responsible to do our best and be our best. I’ve come across MANY crooked vents installed by HVAC trades. I always take the time to either straighten them out if it’s just a few screws, or to alert the builder before I side around it if it’s spray foamed in or if it would be illegal for me to touch/move it (for example, anything electrical). As trades people, we need to take pride in our work and ditch the “It’s not my problem attitude”. What are your thoughts on this? . . . . . . . . . .

This is how I join J-channel. It isn’t how the Vinyl Siding Institute shows it, but I’ve found it to work well over the years. I’ve learned over the past 20 years in the trades that there are always many ways to get a task done and the different ways aren’t necessarily wrong. The main thing is to give the customer a quality end result that will last the life of the product. Do you do this differently? . . . . . . . . . . . .

It’s crazy that this video clip is from almost exactly a year ago. I was in a t-shirt. Now it’s -20°C (-4°F) with 6” of snow on the ground. I install aluminum soffit with a cordless narrow crown stapler (I’ve been using this for almost 10 yrs and prior to that using a pneumatic stapler for over a decade). I use 1” length - all of the staples are hidden by the lip of the aluminum fascia. You’ll see that every few pieces I use my square to check to make sure the soffit isn’t creeping. Near the end of the video you’ll see me snip a corner off the soffit because I saw that it was curled over - so rather than trying to uncurl it or fight with it, I just snipped it off. I realize that not everything installs the same way, I’m just showing you what’s worked for me for over 20 years. I live in a neighborhood where I installed the siding/soffit on over 50 homes - none of them have had soffit or siding blowing off as I drive by many of them daily. Thanks for watching and following along. I appreciate it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I don’t always start the soffit from the top. It depends on the situation. If it’s a steep gable on the side of the house 3 stories in the air, then I’ll work my way from the bottom up, installing the siding and soffit as I go. Starting from the top makes the gable even and puts the soffit bend at the rib, making it look perfect. I’ve been using a Dewalt narrow crown stapler for over 9 years to install aluminum soffit. Previous to that I used a pneumatic stapler. It isn’t going to blow off - the fascia lip covers the staples and tidies everything up. I live in a neighborhood where I sided over 50 homes almost 20 years ago and drive by many of those homes daily - the soffit and fascia are still on nicely even through multiple wind storms that sent shingles flying off many houses. Also, the vented soffit is because the homeowner supplied all the material and wanted everything to match. I just came for the day to give him some help and pointers. Do you start your soffit at the top and work your way down? . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This is how I do inside corners on fascia. The key to inside corners in metal work is to have a fold in the piece behind it, and a tab for the bottom mitre so that any overlapping pieces won’t show any gaps. It’s not rocket science, but it’s something I had to learn by trial and error and look at nearby houses to figure it out. I hope that this video will help someone out there who may be doing it for the first time or working on their own DIY project. . . . . . . . . . . . .
