Hello Chicago! Jaden Smiley is bringing Deep Cuts your way. He was in Hyde Park at Page Too Hair Design salon and Ashley Thomas took time to chat with him.

Ashley operates Lenae Amor Beauty LLC. She got into the industry as a young teenager looking for a way to contribute to the household income. Then she fell in love with what she was doing and decided to make a career out of it.

For others thinking about becoming a stylist, Ashley advises them to love what you do, and ignore the haters. Don't let others get in the way of you reaching your goals. But, be ready to work because independent stylists have to multitask.

Black hair and beauty professionals, if Jaden pulls up on you, have a quick convo. We'll post it on The PMP Network because we support Black-owned businesses and stream content relevant to our communities.

Deregulating licensing for beauty professionals is one of the policy changes being discussed by legislators that could impact the beauty industry. Some are advocating for loosening regulations to make it easier for people to work in the industry, while others emphasize the importance of licensing for public safety and hygiene.

On March 31st during a panel discussion at SHFT: The Gathering, Greg Rutledge, Jr. was asked how professionals in the black beauty industry could be involved to influence the outcome of such legislation. Rutledge, who is the founder of the Atlanta Barber Institute, said more participation is needed across the industry, from barbers and stylists to nail techs and aestheticians. He advised his colleagues that the future of their profession depends keeping each other informed and aware of what's going on. They should even consider becoming lobbyists to represent the black beauty industry.

SHFT is the acronym for Strategic Hub for Financial and Trade Empowerment, and The Gathering was hosted by the Black Beauty Industry Initiative of the Atlanta Black Chambers.

The purpose of The Gathering was to unite industry leaders and changemakers to educate, innovate, and push the Black beauty industry forward. Panel discussions and fireside chats focused on advocacy for equitable policy in the beauty industry, funding opportunities for beauty professionals, addressing health disparities, and emerging technologies.

Rutledge spoke on a panel that also included Georgia State Representative Derrick Jackson and John H. Moye, Director of the Office for Policy & Legislative Affairs at the Urban League of Greater Atlanta. The discussion was moderated by branding and marketing strategist Kay Cantrell.

Collaboration gives small businesses more bandwidth and increased capacity to provide their products and services to a larger customer base. This week at an event sponsored by the Atlanta Black Chambers, PMP's CEO Sharon Brooks Hodge announced that Phenomenal Media Productions will be partnering with Morale Ocain and The Hair Debate to launch a new program called Roots & Radiance. The content will highlight the Black Hair and Beauty industry.

Initially, Roots & Radiance will stream on The PMP Network on YouTube. But our goal is to evolve into a network devoted to this audience.

Black consumers are responsible for roughly 11% of total beauty spending in the U.S., yet Black-owned brands make up only 2.5% of the beauty industry's revenue. One of the reasons is that these brands don’t get the exposure they need and deserve. Morale and I decided to step up and fill that void.

Phenomenal Media Productions, is a multimedia content creator that streams programs relevant to Black-owned businesses and the communities where they thrive. The Hair Debate, is a media community where hair lovers and professionals come together to discuss, clear up misconceptions, and explore everything about hair.

Together, we are uniquely positioned to produce an informative, engaging, and fun 30-minute show focusing on Black hair, health, and wellness. Each episode will contain three 10-minute segments featuring male and female expert perspectives, discussions, personal stories, along with practical and affordable beauty and wellness advice. This will be a platform for Black-owned brands to be more visible.

What does it take to build a community? At a minimum, you have to show up and support each other. Thanks to two of the PMP team members, Hailie Gerard and Jaden Smiley, Phenomenal Media Productions was able to show up and represent Pittsburgh Yards at the community event sponsored by the Andrew P Stewart Center on Saturday, March 29th.

The event was held at Gideons Elementary School in the neighborhood where the PMP production studio is located. We had candy, cookies, and fruit snacks for the kids and learned more about the resources available in the community.

PMP appreciates having an inclusive and supportive environment to grow our business.
