Historic Strike Shakes the Cannabis Industry
The Herbal Wellness Center in Columbus, Ohio—formerly known as Strawberry Fields—became the focus of statewide attention in late September 2025 when its workers launched what has now become the longest cannabis dispensary strike in U.S. history. The walkout, driven by accusations of unfair labor practices and a year of stalled contract negotiations, represents a pivotal moment in Ohio’s rapidly evolving cannabis industry.
A Union Years in the Making
The seeds of this labor dispute were planted two years earlier. In November 2023, as Ohio prepared to enact full cannabis legalization, workers at the Herbal Wellness Center voted to unionize under Teamsters Local 413. Their goal was straightforward: secure a fair and sustainable contract that recognized their role in a growing market.
But progress came slowly. Over the course of a year, bargaining sessions with the dispensary’s corporate ownership repeatedly broke down. Workers say talks stalled on core issues they considered non-negotiable—annual wage increases, seniority rights, and protection from unjust discipline. As frustration mounted, so did concerns about what employees described as ongoing unfair labor practices.
The Strike Begins
By the end of September 2025, workers decided they had waited long enough. Under the banner Herbal Wellness Center United (HWC United), employees initiated a strike to demand a contract that reflected their contributions and ensured basic workplace stability.
Most budtenders at the dispensary earn between $14 and $20 an hour, but wages were only part of the conflict. Workers emphasized the need for job security, more explicit seniority protections, and a meaningful voice in scheduling and disciplinary decisions.
Operational Disruptions and Rising Support
The strike's impact was immediate. With much of the staff on the picket line, the dispensary was forced to shorten operating hours and rely on replacement workers to keep doors open. Meanwhile, community support surged. Customers, activists, and fellow union members joined workers on the line, bringing food, donations, and encouragement. For many supporters, the strike symbolizes a broader push to ensure that the legal cannabis sector—often marketed as progressive—lives up to its promises for workers.
A Turning Point for Ohio Cannabis Workers
As the strike continues, it stands not only as a response to one workplace dispute but also as a landmark in the labor history of Ohio’s cannabis industry. It marks the first-ever strike by cannabis dispensary workers in the state and highlights the growing power and organization of frontline cannabis employees nationwide.
What began as a conflict over wages and workplace protections has evolved into a broader conversation about fairness, respect, and the future of labor in a rapidly expanding industry. However, once the contract negotiations ultimately concluded, the workers of the Herbal Wellness Center had already made history and changed the narrative of cannabis labor in Ohio. -Written By Ren Bias
