Terry Earwood – Then, Now & Always
Then: Records and Rivalries
In the heyday of Super/Stock, few combinations drew as much attention as Terry Earwood behind the wheel of Steve Bagwell’s SS/AA Plymouth Barracuda. With Steve Lockridge as crew chief, the car became a terror on the quarter mile. Earwood drove it to the top of the class, becoming a former NHRA National Record Holder with a blistering 9.70 at 139 mph.
The car was more than fast — it was a showcase for the best in performance parts and craftsmanship. Names like Barnett Race Cars, Stewart Warner, Turbo Action, Valvoline, and others were proudly displayed, reflecting the trust these companies placed in racers who pushed the limits. The bright orange-and-yellow Barracuda became a rolling billboard for speed, engineering, and hometown pride.
Now: The Throwback Returns
Fast forward to 2025, and the Barnett SS/AH Barracuda has been reborn. Wearing the throwback paint scheme from Earwood’s Bagwell days, the car honors a golden chapter in drag racing history.
But this isn’t just about nostalgia. This year, Stewart Way rides shotgun with Terry, trading stories of the past while making new memories on the road and at the track. With every pass, the Barracuda is a time machine — blending the names and partnerships of yesterday with the friendships and passion that carry forward today.
Legacy: More Than Wins
While Terry Earwood will always be remembered as a former U.S. Nationals Super/Stock Winner and record-setting drag racer, his impact stretches far beyond the starting line. He became a respected competitor in Trans-Am and road racing, proving his versatility as a driver. Later, he shaped generations of racers as Chief Instructor at Skip Barber Racing School, helping hundreds of professionals and amateurs sharpen their craft.
From Barnett Race Cars to the U.S. Nationals at Indy, Earwood’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and passing on the lessons learned. The paint may be fresh, but the history is deep — and the friendships forged through racing continue to fuel the next pass.
