In the autumn of 2024, scholar-activist Yavor Tarinski met, over a video call, with Dr. Modibo Kadalie to discuss the progress on the manuscript for Tarinski’s new book, "Horizons of Direct Democracy: Revolutionary Politics in an Age of Social and Ecological Collapse" (2025), and to exchange their respective insights as scholar-activists of direct democracy and social ecology. The conversation became a deep-dive into the politics of direct democracy, examining movements, histories, and ideas from around the world. It was so fruitful that we felt compelled to include a complete transcription in the book (which is also reproduced below). Enjoy!

"Zonneveld takes us from precolonial moments of transracial solidarity across four centuries to the racist union busting of Black and white Stone Mountain quarry workers during the Reconstruction period. In this connection, he meticulously describes the array of state policies that established and maintained the paralyzing social separation within and between certain sectors of the emerging American working class."
