Historic Election: Freddie Lee Poindexter, Jr. Becomes Macon, MS's First African American and Youngest Mayor
Macon, MS – Freddie Lee Poindexter, Jr. has etched his name in the history books by becoming the City of Macon’s first African American and youngest Mayor, following a successful campaign certified by Chairman Lafeyounda LJ Brooks and the Noxubee County Democratic Party. The election results have been officially declared, marking a significant milestone for the community.
Mr. Poindexter is set to take office on July 1, 2025, following a private inaugural ceremony slated to host notable celebrity guests. This intimate celebration will be succeeded by a public event, inviting community members to witness Mr. Poindexter take his official oath of office—details of which will be announced soon.
In a heartfelt statement, Poindexter expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his campaign: “I feel so blessed at this time; this really feels like a dream. There were many obstacles thrown my way, but I kept the faith and remained focused on the main goal: to keep God first and run a fair and clean campaign.”
Acknowledging his campaign team's dedication, Poindexter highlighted the critical roles played by individuals such as Campaign Manager Margaret Yates, who organized the grassroots (Boots on the Ground) efforts that encouraged voters, and Business Manager Darold Mitchell, who kept the team uplifted and motivated through prayer.
“I cannot forget those who really put in the work,” continued Poindexter, recognizing his campaign team members: Martha Dora, Teresa Hughes, Alice Bonner, Laquacious Rupert, Errick Walker, Jakerria Bean, Terrica Naylor, Terrinecia Bruce, Herbert Shields, Aisha Little, Kim Silvers, Peggy Brown, Martina Jackson, Kelsie Lee, Monique Spann, Tracy Miller, Tyneka Mitchell, and Toni Lee among others. “The support they provided—whether through transportation or assisting voters—was invaluable.”
Looking to the future, Poindexter made it clear that the journey has just begun. “I am excited about getting started,” he stated. “I look forward to working with our Board of Alderman and every department under the City of Macon to help grow our city and make this a place we are all proud to call home. Remember, we are Better Together.”
As Poindexter embarks on this new chapter, the community of Macon stands united in anticipation of the progress and change his leadership promises to bring.
