Happy birthday Joshua Bordonaro, until we see each other again in Valhalla.
Today would have been the 42nd birthday of Gunnery Sergeant Joshua Bordonaro. Josh took his own life on his birthday in 2016. Every year I honour his memory and every year I get choked up making this post.
I met Josh when we were in the Army. We became fast friends, bonding over punk rock, raw comedy, Star Wars, and D&D. Josh was one of the funniest guys I had ever met. Josh hated the unit we were assigned to and eventually decided to get out of the military, in part, because of how he was treated there. He got a tattoo of dogtags and combat boots that said NEVER AGAIN. And yet, years later I was part of his decision to join the Marine Corps.
A few weeks prior to his death, I had spoken to Josh via Facebook and he'd asked if he could be in one of my movies. I was 100% down for that because I'd get to see my best friend again. I didn't know how well he could act but I knew he could act, and he was funny. I began working on a way to get him over to Atlanta and get him some screen time.
I learned of his death the day after it happened and it wrecked me, emotionally. Losing a brother is never easy. Losing a brother to su***de is the fu***ng worst.
I may not be able to put Josh in any of my films, but I can make him part of a film. So our Afghanistan war film The Cost of Living is not only dedicated to Josh but features a character who personifies Josh. Semper Fi brother. See you in Valhalla.
