Juneteenth marks the last group of enslaved people in the U.S. learning they were free, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The original celebration in 1866 included prayer services, barbecues, and music, setting the tone for how it’s celebrated today. “Juneteenth” wasn’t a federal holiday until 2021, making it one of the most recent additions to the national calendar. Most folks eat a lot of Red foods and drinks, like strawberry soda and red velvet cake, are traditional Juneteenth staples symbolizing resilience and the bloodshed of enslaved ancestors. General Order No. 3, which announced the end of slavery in Texas, also encouraged formerly enslaved people to stay with their former enslavers as paid laborers a reminder that freedom came with complexity.Happy Juneteenth and make sure you tell everyone this historical day 🎙️
