Leonidas I, king of Sparta, is immortalized for his valiant—if doomed—stand against Xerxes’ vast Persian forces at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. He rose to the throne in his early fifties after his brother was removed for alleged madness (though some scholars argue Leonidas may have played a darker role in that transition). Unlike most Spartan princes, he endured the full agoge, the brutal training system designed to forge Spartan youth into elite citizen‑soldiers. Little survives about his reign, but his final campaign would define him forever.

At Thermopylae, Leonidas and his 300 hand‑picked veterans held the narrow coastal pass—sea to the right, cliffs to the left—against Xerxes’ famed Immortals. For three days they turned the terrain into a killing ground, their discipline and phalanx tactics stalling an empire long enough for the rest of Hellas (Greece) to prepare for the greater war ahead. The nearby sulfur springs only added to the battle’s almost mythic atmosphere.

On the third day, betrayal broke the stalemate. A local from Trachis, named Ephialtes, revealed a hidden mountain path, allowing the Persians to flank the Spartans and end Leonidas’ stand. Yet his defiance—and his legendary challenge, “Molon Labe” (“Come and take them”) when ordered to surrender his weapons—echoes through history as the rallying cry of a king who chose duty over survival.

Right now, these rare alternate arts can only be found in booster packs, appearing as one of the three extra cards in each 13‑card pack.
