You’ve probably heard of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, but how about “Reduce, Reuse, Refill, and Refuse”?

Veronica Apecena never expected to launch a retail business.

And now, Apecena is the owner of Joyful Jarra, a refillery providing non-toxic, low-waste, and a variety of locally sourced home and body products to Atlantans.

The turning point for Apecena came when she visited a North Carolina refillery where a friend with a developmental disability label was working. “She was so empowered and talking so positively about this new role. And within minutes of walking in the door of the refillery, I knew I needed to recreate this for communities in Atlanta,” said Apecena.

Learn how Apecena launched Joyful Jarra to unite the circular economy with inclusive employment here 🔗https://www.techsquareatl.com/tech-square-news/2026/6/2/sustainability-on-tap-joyful-jarra-brings-sustainable-options-to-atlantans

🌎Last week, The American Marketing Association's Atlanta chapter packed the Chick-fil-a College Football Hall of Fame for Celebrating the Global Games, and the conversation was bigger than a recap. It was about getting over Atlanta's "imposter syndrome" and celebrating the how impressively the city has moved forward in sports, entertainment, and tech!

⚽With FIFA World Cup 2026 coming here, the room was full of marketers, sports execs, and creatives talking about what Atlanta has quietly built — and why it's time to stop being modest about it. Soccer. Esports. Hip-hop. World-class brands. Local talent doing work that doesn't need to leave the city to be great.

“People who move around Atlanta outside of cars come face to face with extreme heat, but often lack shade or other infrastructure, such as bus shelters, that would reduce their exposure. And the burdens aren’t shared equally,” said Rebecca Serna, Executive Director of Propel ATL.

To understand where heat risk is highest, as temperatures can vary significantly based on nearby buildings and greenery, Georgia Tech researchers and community advocates are attaching temperature and air quality sensors to their backpacks and bikes, turning every step into data collection🚶

The NO-HEAT initiative, led by Dr. Rounaq Basu at the Georgia Tech School of City & Regional Planning, is mapping heat risk at the sidewalk level, providing city planners with actionable data and empowering people to find the coolest walking and biking routes as they move around the city 🌇

“Our goal is to be proactive, to provide cities and people with tools they can use to change how they move through cities in the heat. Why should we wait for heat strokes or other health-related incidents to happen?” said Basu.

Check out the video to hear from the team about how they are collecting on-the-ground data and explore the full story here 🔗 https://www.techsquareatl.com/tech-square-news/2026/5/28/turning-every-step-into-data-collection

📱Most people haven't considered that the smartphone in their pocket could be part of a clinical workflow. TSRB researcher Sixuan Wu (Uncommon Sense Lab, College of Computing) is changing that.

🔬His project, µMobileScan, pairs a smartphone with a standard microscope to digitize blood cell analysis. The result is faster, more accurate red blood cell counts that can be stored, shared, and reviewed later.

Do you live in a harmonious city? 🏙️

Seung Jae Lieu, a PhD student at Georgia Tech with the Center for Urban Resilience and Analytics (CURA) and the School of City and Regional Planning, is investigating why people still may not walk or bike to nearby amenities, even when they are close by.

“It’s not true that just because you’re close to somewhere, you will walk there,” said Lieu.

Lieu’s work explores how street completeness and the harmony of amenities shape our everyday travel choices, whether we walk 🚶, bike 🚲, or drive 🚗

Curious about how your neighborhood can be more harmonious?
