Fun Fact Friday - Trash Talk
After a competitive bidding process and months of negotiation, the City of Attleboro recently entered into a new 5-year contract with Waste Management for residential curb side trash and recycling collection and disposal.
The bad news is that due to decreasing amounts of landfill space in Massachusetts solid waste disposal costs continue to increase. Recycling remains an important and effective way to minimize these increases, so please keep recycling all appropriate items!
The good news is that we secured some new positive changes to the program:
- Effective this year, we added two more scheduled “bulk amnesty weeks” for each year of the contract at no additional cost to the City or rate payers. On designated weeks each year, the property owner shall request with Waste Management (1-800-972-4545) their free bulk pickups of two large bulk items and two small bulk items for each residence in the trash program.
- Beginning next July, residents will have the option of purchasing one 64-gallon trash cart per household and returning their 35-gallon trash cart to the City. In addition to better accommodating large households, using the bigger barrels instead of City trash bags may help reduce the amount of loose trash that falls or is blown out of untied bags. The cost of the 64-gallon barrels has yet to be determined and they cannot be used for disposal of recyclable items.
