From Cloverbud to Capitol Hill, former Alabama 4-H member Timothy Cleveland now serves the USDA.

He was recently appointed as a special assistant to the under scretary for the Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services.

"We celebrate Alabama 4-H alum Timothy Cleveland as he takes on this vital role at USDA,” said Nancy Alexander, Alabama Extension specialist for 4-H youth development. “His journey from 4-H meetings to national leadership is a shining example of how 4-H grows true leaders who serve with purpose and passion. We couldn’t be prouder."

Let's settle this age-old debate. Are they lightning bugs or fireflies?

These little insects that light up the summer nights are actually beetles. Alabama is home to about 50 different species. They thrive near standing water, tall grasses, and wooded areas. Fourteen percent of species are at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticides.

Want to help fireflies stick around?

- Turn off outdoor lights during mating season.
- Leave leaf litter and tall grass patches.
- Add a water garden or keep damp areas.
- Go easy on the pesticides and fertilizer.

Let’s keep the glow going for future summers!

Since its relaunch in October 2023, the Alabama Master Naturalist program has quickly grown, now with more than 400 members. Conducted through Alabama Extension, the program's primary goals are to teach Alabamians about the state’s natural world and encourage greater involvement in conservation-related volunteerism.

“I chose to participate in the Alabama Master Naturalist program because it gives me the opportunity to learn more about Alabama's natural environment, as well as meet and network with other people who have similar interests,” said Tim Gels, a program participant. “Though I'm already an active volunteer in my community, I appreciate that component of the program as well.”

The System employs more than 800 faculty, professional educators, and staff members operating in offices in every one of Alabama’s 67 counties and in nine urban centers covering the major regions of the state. In conjunction with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, the system also staffs six Extension and Research Centers located in the state’s principal geographic regions.
