In November, Kunabulilh (Nabu) reached some exciting milestones!

He began exploring parts of the bear front yard where he forages and climbs on the structures.

He doubled in weight since arriving! When he arrived in June, Nabu weighed 86 pounds. Now, at about 1 year and 10 months old, he weighs 165 pounds. Given that Nabu weighed only 20 pounds when he was first rescued by Gold Country Wildlife Rescue, this is an impressive gain and shows how well his recovery has gone.

Finally, he’s gotten very sleepy! Since he is young and hasn’t experienced winter in our region before, we were unsure if he would enter torpor this winter. This week, he decided it was time, and he has been napping inside, just like Tule and Ishŭng. Sweet dreams, bears!

🚧 Heads Up, Auburn! Major Road Construction Begins 12/1/25, TOMORROW 🚧

Starting December 1, 2025, Caltrans will begin 24/7 construction at the intersection of Highway 49 and El Dorado St. (also known as Lincoln Way and Borland Ave.). The project will require a full road closure for approximately three weeks, with the road currently expected to reopen on December 22, 2025.

Here’s what to expect:
🔸 Increased Traffic Congestion
Detours will be in place, so please plan for delays and give yourself extra travel time.
🔸 High St. Closure
Closed just east of Lincoln Way (heading into the canyon from Auburn).
➡️ Detour: Lincoln Way to Elm Ave.
🔸 Borland Ave. Closure
Closed just south of the Hwy 49/Borland intersection.
➡️ Note: Access to Borland Ave. businesses will remain open.
🔸 Lincoln Way Closure
Closed just south of Aeolia Dr.
🔸 Highway 49 Closure (Canyon Side)
Closed east of the Hwy 49/El Dorado intersection (coming up out of the canyon).
➡️ Additional signage at the confluence will detour traffic up Old Foresthill Rd.
