Want your garden to smell sweet next spring? Bethany O'Rear, a home horticulture agent with Alabama Extension, said the first step to a blooming rose garden is to take advantage of favorable conditions and plant new rose bushes now.

"Mid-November to mid-February is the ideal planting time," O'Rear said. "This allows them to establish a good root system before they start pushing out new growth in spring."

Never Fear...Extension is here! Black Widow Myths, Busted!

They may have a spooky rep, but these spiders aren’t quite the nightmare you’ve heard about:

It’s the female you want to watch for. She can live up to a year, while males make it about 4 months.

Only females bite… yikes! But fatalities are extremely rare. As long as you don’t trap one against your skin, you’ll both walk away.

And that whole “female eats the male after mating” story? Mostly a myth! Males often hang around after, living off prey she captures.

Spooky? Yes. Deadly monster? Not really.

Every year, there are many unknowns as one cotton season ends and preparations for the next begin. In 2026, there may be more unknowns than at any time in recent history for cotton producers in the Southeastern US.

Collaborative research, observations from research, and Extension entomologists at Auburn University, Clemson University, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia have some answers for cotton producers regarding the cotton gassed going into 2026.

If you spy a teal pumpkin on Halloween, do you know what it means? Teal pumpkins are used to promote food allergy awareness during Halloween. Food allergies affect one in thirteen children in the United States, or about two children per classroom.

Tips for a Safer Halloween:
Display a teal pumpkin to show that you offer nonfood treats.
Wash your hands before handling both food and nonfood items.
Use separate containers: one for allergen-safe treats and one for traditional candy.
If possible, clearly label the containers or offer children the choice of an allergen-safe treat.
