We had the opportunity to sit down with the Chief of Auburn Police Department, Jason Moen.

In an upcoming episode of LA Metro Magazine Podcast, we talk about what it means to be a police officer, the challenges of the job, ice cream delivery, and so much more.

We learned a lot from him, like how experience as a firefighter crosses over into policing, and how when you bring truckloads of ice cream to a neighborhood, the kids (and parents) beam with delight.

The biggest take away for us, however, is that there's no doubt Moen truly cares about this community, keeping it safe and striving for excellence every day.

Stay tuned for Jason's episode, coming soon! 🎧

To say there is no greater cheerleader of Lewiston Auburn than Tom Platz would be paradoxical wordplay. Few individuals come to mind when you consider someone who’s given so much to the Lewiston Auburn community while choosing to remain out of the spotlight. Some would say a selfless architect and developer, others might call him a philanthropist, and while those are accurate descriptions, we think the term “humble champion” suits him best.

Thank you, Tom, for all you have done and continue to do for this community.

Auburn Development Soars Despite COVID-19

AUBURN – Auburn’s commitment to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on development within the city is paying off in a big way. City officials report unprecedented new growth across diverse categories such as warehouse, residential, market rate multi-family, and manufacturing.

A recent Maine Biz Article highlighted 150,000 square feet of new development permitted in Portland during the pandemic. Between February and June of this year, Auburn reports that 288,212 SF of new floor area has already been permitted for construction.

And this momentum will continue, with recent Planning Board approvals totaling $55.8 Million dollars in new structures (269,000 square feet of new floor area) and two solar projects totaling $34 Million in investment and 80 acres of new panels. These approvals are ready for permitting over the next six months.

“These numbers are incredible,” said Eric Cousens, Deputy Director of Economic & Community Development. “And with the recent Planning Board approvals, new downtown investment incentives, and new projects in discussion, Auburn’s foreseeable future does indeed look very bright.”

“Everything we are doing right now will have a direct, positive impact on tax revenues and investment that will hit the books in April 2021,” added Cousens. “I am incredibly impressed with how well the Planning Board and staff have adapted to new challenges.”

With $1,000,000 in recently approved downtown development incentives, CDBG incentives, the Federal Opportunity Zone, and two new premium riverfront development sites going to market, the City of Auburn is anticipating a record-setting year for new downtown development.

“I invite developers who are looking elsewhere and finding that the market is tight and available property is limited to connect with us,” said Cousens. “Our city offers a one-stop, friendly, and streamlined review process for local and state delegated permit approvals. If you want to work with talented, helpful staff for one-stop development, look no further than Auburn.”

Law enforcement dogs are on the job every day all across Maine. They are often the very first to be deployed into highly dangerous environments.

Today we recognize one canine that’s close to home. Rocky, of the Auburn Police Department, has been part of the team since 2013. A German shepherd trained in patrol and drug detection, Rocky was named in honor of Auburn Police Officer Rodney “Rocky” Bonney who was killed in the line of duty on April 6, 1981.

He and his handler, Officer Don Cousins, work hard every day to protect and serve the public.

Meet Kinzie of Auburn (pictured below with her mother, Holly).

In the summer of 2015, at just six and a half years old, Kinzie was diagnosed with Stage IV High-Risk Neuroblastoma. She immediately began the required treatment plan that included chemotherapy, radiation, two stem cell transplants, and antibody treatments.

Once Make-A-Wish Maine received word of Kinzie's story, they got to work putting together the trip of a lifetime. And in March of 2017, Kinzie and her family were sent to Florida where her wish to swim with dolphins came true.

After the wish, Kinzie continued her treatment. With determination, love, and hope, she battled back and has been in remission for three and a half years.

"I still feel like the positive thought we put behind the wish is part of how she recovered," reflects Holly. "You can have your medicine, you can have your treatment protocols and the best doctors in the world, but you also have to have hope and positive energy to picture things in the future in order to get through something like that."

Our sister publication, Uncle Andy's Digest, is running a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Maine in their next issue. Learn more by visiting www.uncleandys.com/make-a-wish

When choosing where to give, please consider this wonderful organization, and help transform the lives of children right here in Maine - just like Kinzie.

Steve Grenier and Arthur Melendy of Main Street Music Lessons describe themselves as a service-based business, providing a valuable supplement to public music education, and seeking to broaden and enrich the lives of their students and the community at large.

"We really focus on the kids, giving them ways to interact and communicate," Grenier says of lessons they give the students. "Studies have been done proving that music enhances brain activity and neural processing."

"Captain Keene has served the citizens of Auburn as a Firefighter/EMT for the past 25 years spending much of his time assigned to Engine 2 in South Auburn and worked his way through the ranks as a Captain out of Central Station.

His daily drive to make us better, his humor, ability to get any job done, and long conversations will be missed by all."

- Auburn Fire Department

Fire Chief Robert Chase remarks, "[Keene has] accomplished greatness in the past 25 years, and I have no doubt he'll achieve nothing less in his future endeavors. Although we will miss our #73 immensely, his contributions to the Auburn Fire Department will remain. We thank you, Chip as a Captain, a brother, and as our friend."

Congratulations Captain Keene on an accomplished career, and thank you for your service to our community.

Both Hussein and Philippon stress that building meaningful connections takes effort and a willingness to be open on all sides. And as Hussein says, it is not always about “an issue.” Very often, it’s about sharing and celebrating culture.
