Track by track break down of “Pop Culture Villian”.
9. “Sunday Morning Coffee” - Let me first shoutout my brotha from anotha, , for this track; he has become a constant collaborator who I work with now over the years. Our love for those artists we listen to, vinyl, sneakers, and occasional sports BS I think sealed this bond. Hopefully, those songs we have done (which are amazing in my opinion) see the light of day, lol. But for now, we have this track and I immediately hit him up about it and copped it. I had no direction for it at first but I heard something in the beat I just to express over it. And I think after I was freestyling on the train to get somewhere to grab a coffee I came up with the concept of being on my way somewhere and I’m having complex moments of thoughts in my head racing before a moment of truth arrives. First verse was me trying to figure out life while randos on the street want to ask me for anything to break my focus. Reflecting on hard times and etc. as I make my way to a destination. Second verse is where that moment of truth comes in; a coffee “date” with someone I used to deal with. It is loosely based on this because I’ve done coffee dates that were cool and some not so cool. This was more of a “what do you need from me” kind of “date” as if the person initiated it. And I had to end it like “oh, you need closure…welp here you go, please let me be”. Which I also loosely based on other events that have happened in the past in which I reacted in this manner. Originally, Bill thought I needed more energy within it and I considered it; only thing for me was this was a stormy weather outside kind of vibe. I think I wound up losing the lyrics for this and everything else for this song was fine. I revisited it after a year or so while on tour with and we listened to it. And after saying “hey Bill the song is cool and we have too much in the vault, what’s the word?”, and with his cool demeanor he was like “aight man you right”, lol. Hopefully this paves the way for more from me and Bill in the future.
