It’s the final day of the Topsham Fair and so it’s the final day of harness racing too. It’s a glorious day so come on out and put a couple of bucks on the ponies and come by to my broadcast location directly in front of the grandstand.

Me and the ponies are ready to roll at the 171st Topsham Fair! The gates are open and the midway opens at 2 so come on by.., bet on a couple of horses, have fair food and enjoy this perfect day for racing and fairing.

Just what kind of a man was John Wolfgram? My friend, Mike Hunter explains.

“Mike, I played football for coach Wolfgram in the fall of 86’, my senior year at SP. In my junior year we were predicted to play for a state championship. Our O line averaged 250lbs. Our QB who was a senior had a cannon for an arm. We finished 4-4 that season. No playoffs. The summer going into my senior year I was at a football camp held at Maine Maritime Academy. I guy I’d never met came up to me and introduced him self as “ John Wolfgram, the new coach of South Portland”. I didn’t even know they had hired a coach yet. Mike, we sat and talked about how important discipline and leadership is and how he needed me, as a senior, to step up and instill this in my teammates. That talk really got me fired up for the season. We learned discipline the very first day of practice when he yelled at us for swatting the mosquitoes landing all over us. “Cut your swatting, they haven’t done anything to you”. ! When it came time for wind sprints he would run them with us! Often beating everyone to the finish. And game preparation, forget it, there was no one better. I got a call from Springfield College about coming to play ball for them. The coach said how impressed he was with a play I made on a screen pass. While he was talking I’m thinking to myself “it was easy to make the play when it was driven into my head that the play was coming in that situation”. That’s the preparation Coach gave the team week in and week out. We went on to make the playoffs and eventually losing to TA in the quarter finals. We had guys make first and second team all state and our running back Scott Millington was a Fitzy finalist. Coach was the greatest motivator I’ve ever had in my life. I honestly don’t think I would have graduated from Maine Maritime Academy if John Wolfgram wasn’t a part of my life. The Maine football community has lot a truly great man.”

Wolfgram won 10 championships and more than 300 games during a four-decade run that saw him lead four different high school programs in Maine.

To say we’ve lost a great one is an understatement. John Wolfgram is gone. Unquestionably the greatest football coach in Maine history.
