It is a great pleasure to be added to what has always been our first choice for our liturgical music planning.

The themes of Second Coming, night, darkness and vigilance are prevalent in today's liturgy. Somber and solemn music may help to point out this chilling reminder of the end of the world and our own destiny.

Catholics don't sing because the music is ever-changing. New translations, new melodies, music chosen because "we like it".

If you want Catholics to sing, call up Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, Immaculate Mary, Come Holy Ghost...and more that they know from years past.

Singing hymns that have been "popular" with Catholics over the years creates a singing congregation. You do not have to have a degree in music and theology with this hymnal. You cannot "go wrong" with any of the 295 hymns.

You just have to want people to sing.😀

Sing My Soul - just below in Youtube:

Listen to everyone singing their parts and follow them for verses 1, 2, and 3. On the last verse, they all sing only the melody, unison, like a Catholic congregation at Mass with only the melody, or worse yet, the words only, in their hands.
Catholics do read music, Catholics can sing and realize the beauty of hymns while singing with the choir, singing with only the organ and even singing a capella - but only if they are given the music in their hands.
SInging the 295 hymns in this hymnal with your congregation in harmony is like sun shining through a stained glass window.

"When writing a poem, you discover that the very necessity of fitting your meaning into a specific form requires you to stretch your imagination for new meanings. You reject certain ways of writing and select others, always trying to arrange the words in a new and imagintative way. Form is an aid to finding new meaning, a stimulus to discovering the essence you wish to express. Think how much more meaning Shakespeare infused into his plays because they were written in blank verse rather than prose, or into his sonnets because they were limited to fourteen lines."

Michael Michalko

The hymns, all 295 of them, in A Catholic Book of Hymns are more valuable, more meaningful for being written in strict meter rather just as a rambling song. More work, more time and inspiration made them possible and, I hesitate to use the word, popular - to last for centuries. There is nothing temporary about any of them.
