In our series, we are breaking down the science of methane in ruminant livestock production. Each week, we will feature one of five new fact sheets developed under the advisement of Dr. Sara Place, in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Agriculture, all focused on methane in livestock systems.

This week’s fact sheet explains what methane is and how it’s produced in animal agriculture. It also explores trends in methane emissions over time in the U.S., offering insights into system efficiency and identifying opportunities for further mitigation to support a more resilient, sustainable food system.

🚨 Due to a newly reported northward spread of New World Screwworm in Mexico, Secretary Rollins has ordered the closure of livestock trade through southern ports of entry effective immediately.

To ensure the protection of U.S. livestock herds, USDA is holding Mexico accountable by ensuring proactive measures are being taken to maintain a NWS free barrier. https://www.usda.gov/about-usda/news/press-releases/2025/07/09/secretary-rollins-takes-decisive-action-and-shuts-down-us-southern-border-ports-livestock-trade-due

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of John Stulp during this difficult time. John was a deeply respected leader whose service as Colorado’s Commissioner of Agriculture, water policy adviser to the Governor, and county commissioner left a lasting impact. His dedication to agriculture and rural communities was unwavering, and he was honored with CLA’s Top Choice Award in recognition of that commitment. John's legacy will continue to inspire those who care for Colorado’s land, water, and people.

Brandon Beiger attended the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's Young Cattlemen's Conference earlier this month as CLA’s candidate.
Through exclusive behind-the-scenes access, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire beef supply chain while engaging in the robust grassroots advocacy process. During the week-long program, the group traveled to Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.
A highlight of the program is the opportunity to engage directly with elected leaders on Capitol Hill and advocate for policies that impact America’s cattle and beef producers.
