When you show your teen the movie that terrified you as a teen…and he harshly judges your movie tastes.

Then you explain how the internet wasn’t like how it is today, and at the time, you thought it was real found footage.

As you continue defending yourself, you realize how old you sound. So, you take the fact that the teen sat through the entire movie as a WIN. 🙌👵🏻

I’ll never forget visiting the memorial just days after the Aurora theater shooting that happened 14 years ago today.

I stood there for a long time, taking in the unimaginable loss.

All of a sudden, a line of police cars pulled up with their lights on, but no sirens.

They were some of the first responders who had rushed into the theater that night to save lives. They had come to pay their respects.

While I didn’t personally know any of the victims or their families, this wasn’t just another movie theater to me.

It was our theater.

My husband and I used to live just down the road in Aurora, and before we became parents, we’d gone there countless times for date nights.

After we had our son and started touring schools, I remember how every conversation eventually turned to security.

No one had to say the word. We all knew why.

Columbine had already changed Colorado.

Aurora became another heartbreaking reminder that ordinary places can become the sites of extraordinary tragedy.

When we moved to New Mexico in 2017, I was surprised my son’s elementary school wasn’t fenced, and some of the exterior doors weren’t even locked.

It made me so uneasy that I emailed the principal. He responded with such kindness and understanding.

My son is now in high school. The elementary school that once had open grounds is now fenced and secured, like so many schools across our country.

We’ve adapted.

We build fences.

We do safety drills.

We pay our respects at memorials.

And we still go to the movies and send our children to school.

On this anniversary of the Aurora movie theater shooting, I don’t want to let that adaptation become acceptance.

Today, I’m remembering the 12 lives that were taken, 70 people who were injured, everyone whose lives were forever changed, and the far too many lives that have been lost to gun violence since.

They all deserve to be remembered. ❤️

18 years. 18 lessons. Countless reasons to keep choosing each other. ❤️

1. Pick your battles carefully. — Chris

2. Do your best to be supportive, even if you’re unsure or skeptical of what you’re supporting, because you never know what it can bring. — Chris

3. Never stop getting to know one another, because who you are today is not who you’ll be a decade from now. — Jen

4. Always give in to spontaneous mini dates. — Chris

5. Life will throw your world upside down without warning, but getting through it can pull you so much closer together. — Jen

6. In time, you can return to the things that you loved before becoming parents, and it’s so nostalgic (for us, it’s going to see bands we loved in our 20s). — Jen

7. Go on adventures together! Even quick road trips. — Chris

8. Open communication is foundational for a strong relationship, even if you sometimes can’t look eye-to-eye while saying hard things (convos while one person showers behind a curtain can be so helpful). — Jen

9. You must stay united against the enemy, or they will turn you against each other… (This is when Jen told Chris we have to rephrase a parenting essential, and he said, “No, this is perfect.”) — Chris

10. Bodies change. Not just around intimacy, but health needs. And you’ve got to be okay with things getting awkward. — Jen

11. Try to find hobbies or interests you can share. — Chris

18. Never forget to laugh together, ’cause laughter heals the soul. — Chris

One day, the coffee will stay hot.

The house will feel quieter.

And there won’t be a tiny superhero waiting on the couch. ❤️

For me, that time is now, and bittersweet doesn’t even begin to cover it. 💔

😅CPAP Machine Recommendations?!

I’ve struggled with fatigue since getting pneumonia late last year. So, a severe sleep apnea diagnosis wasn’t a huge bummer because I’m hopeful to get energy back.

Our insurance covers 80%, so I’d like to get some recommendations for CPAP machines, if you have any. Thanks. 😘

These two moments hold an entire lifetime between them.

My mom held me as a newborn, and then held me after I became a mother.

From my very first breath, I was in her arms.

While giving birth, the doctor encouraged her to reach down and catch me. And she did!

It was always her dream to be at a birth, and I knew I wanted her at mine.

She was a big part of why I chose an unmedicated birth. I grew up hearing my sister’s and my birth stories and how powerful it was to feel her body completely take over.

I didn’t fully understand what she meant until I experienced birth myself.

When I went into labor a month earlier than expected, she got on a one-way flight from California to Colorado without hesitation.

And I swear…my body waited for her.

Not long after she arrived, I gave birth to my son, her first grandchild.

There’s something so powerful about being held by the first person to ever hold you.

And I will forever carry what it felt like to become a mother, with my mother by my side. 🩷

Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing mom, and to all those who mother. 💐
