12/22/2022

The new studies, conducted among thousands of people in two cities in the Netherlands, are among the largest to date demonstrating potential associations between gut microbiota and mental health. “Ten years ago if you’d said there was something linking depression and the microbiome, you’d be carried out with a straitjacket,” said Jos Bosch, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Amsterdam who co-wrote both studies. “Now absolutely, it’s very clear there’s a link.”

Microorganisms in the gut have been linked to diseases beyond depression including obesity, arthritis, diabetes and several cancers. Researchers said more work is necessary to confirm the associations and explore possible treatments and tests based on the microbes.

The new studies screened for depressive symptoms and analyzed the composition of microorganisms in people’s gut using stool samples. One study, conducted in Rotterdam, involved about 1,000 European participants. The other involved over 3,000 people from different ethnic groups in Amsterdam. Results from the studies, which were adjusted for other variables such as age, smoking and body-mass index, partially corroborated each other, the researchers said.

“We were able to replicate our findings, making our results strong,” said Robert Kraaij, a co-author of the studies and an assistant professor at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam.

Dr. Kraaij and his colleagues found that higher levels of bacteria, including those in the family Lachnospiraceae and the genus Eggerthella, were associated with more depressive symptoms. Lower levels of other bacteria, including those in the family Ruminococcaceae, were also linked to depression.

Scientists said the findings buttress research linking bacteria to depression. “It’s good to see these associations holding up in larger studies,” said Gerard Clarke, a professor of neurobehavioral science at Ireland’s University College Cork who wasn’t involved in the new research. Scientists are exploring whether some gut bacteria produce or consume mood-regulating chemicals, such as serotonin, or chemicals that cause inflammation in the body, which research has linked to depression.

Darling, what would you say if I told you I wanted us to become swingers?” I asked my fiancé this morning over breakfast, having read that a third of men would be open to the idea of more than one partner. Meanwhile, on TikTok, the hashtag “swingers” has been used more than 1.2 billion times, many accompanied by a mysterious pineapple emoji — more on that later.

Our discussion ended there, but for plenty of other couples, in ever increasing numbers, it’s a conversation that leads to much more. And for many there is no better situation in which to swing than on holiday, when rules and routines are ditched in favour of new experiences. “Being away from home, travellers tend to lower their inhibitions, standards and behaviour,” the tourism scholar Peter E Tarlow writes in his paper on the subject, putting it down, in part, to “their feeling of anonymity”.

“After Covid, it was like a dam broke,” says John Kamau, the founder of Cruise Ship Mingle, a dating service that had a 500 per cent rise in sign-ups post-lockdown. “Interestingly, we launched the website in 2017 with singles in mind, but found to our surprise that 70 per cent of users were actually couples looking to swing. So cruisers have long been doing it, but post-lockdown swinging has definitely become more mainstream.”When researching this article I spoke to an old university friend who told me she was part of “the lifestyle” — a prosaic term used by swingers to identify themselves. She’d always appeared so vanilla. She and her husband first tried spouse-swapping six years ago while on holiday in Mexico, where there are several high-end swingers resorts, and they swing only when they’re on foreign land, usually once or twice a year. “We rent out a villa in France or Greece and go with two other couples who are also part of the lifestyle,” she explains.

“I wouldn’t say it saved our marriage, because it wasn’t in trouble, but it’s certainly made it stronger,” she says. “And that’s true of most of the other couples we meet on swingers’ trips, compared with our married friends back home.”

The Conference Board's consumer confidence index increased to 108.3 in December, up from 101.4 in November – its highest level in eight months.
Consumers are also more upbeat about business and labor market conditions with the Conference Board index that measures those sentiments, increasing to 147.2 this month as compared to 138.3 in November.  About The Daily Money

OK Latto’s love for Clayton County is as deep as it is ubiquitous. The vigor with which she mentions her hometown in almost all of her lyrics prompts further research into the area for those unfamiliar with it (”Back to back the Lamb and the Rolls/ All that back to Clayco,” she rhymes on “Soufside”).

This was Latto's second annual “Christmas in Clayco” holiday event where she was given a key to the city and where Dec. 18 will now be known as “Latto Day” in Clayton County.

Sponsored by the rapper’s Win Some Give Some Foundation, the event provided a toy drive, dinner and essential needs for families in Clayton County. The rapper launched the foundation last year.

The artist gave away about 3000 gifts, free food and entertainment to children in the community. 🎁

Authorities have investigated 162 homicides this year, the most since 1996. Last year’s total was 161, up from 157 in 2020 and 99 in 2019.

Over the weekend, homicides were reported on Amal Drive in southwest Atlanta and Baker Street in northeast Atlanta, police said. Additionally, a teenager and a child were killed during a shootout at an apartment complex, but their deaths had not been ruled homicides Monday, police said.

The surge is not unique to Atlanta and comes despite concerted efforts from the mayor’s office and police department to urge people to solve disputes peacefully.

Officials have said many homicide cases, most of which involve gun violence, happen when arguments lead to bullet

Posted • Remember that scene in “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” where he’s wandering alone through a righteously windy storm?

The Atlanta area and much of north Georgia will be a bit like that this weekend (minus the snow, probably). Overnight Thursday and perhaps all the way until Monday, wind chill temperatures are likely to approach zero or head into the negatives.

Gov. Brian Kemp is preparing to declare a state of emergency. State agencies are getting prepared, with crews ready to pre-treat thousands of miles of state routes and highways, utility services on high alert and chainsaw crews on standby.

“We cannot overemphasize how dangerous this cold is going to be,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

A Black transgender man was found dead in Philadelphia last week, having apparently suffered blunt force trauma to his head.
The body of Mar’Quis “MJ” Jackson was discovered Wednesday in the backyard of a home in Philadelphia’s Nicetown neighborhood, Pittsburgh Le***an Correspondents reports. He hadn’t come home two days earlier, December 12, which was his 33rd birthday. His mother called several of his friends and acquaintances, and she eventually reached the occupant of the residence where his body was found. His remains may have been in the yard for the entire two days.
The police have categorized his death as a homicide and are continuing to investigate. Friends said one suspect was detained but released because there was insufficient evidence, according to Pittsburgh Le***an Correspondents.
His friend Sharree Harvey said Jackson was “full of life and love” and “would get the party started anywhere,” the site reports. She has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with Jackson’s funeral expenses.
Jackson grew up in South Carolina. He was a supporter of many LGBTQ+ organizations, including the William Way Community Center in Philadelphia and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Anyone with information that could be useful in the investigation is asked to call or text (215) 686-TIPS or submit a tip online. Tips can be offered anonymously.
Jackson is at least the 38th trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming person to die by violence in the U.S. this year. That total includes a trans man and a trans woman killed in the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs November 19 as well as a trans woman, whose name has not been released, who was killed in Vallejo, Calif., last month. That is most likely an undercount, as many of these deaths go unreported or misreported, with victims deadnamed and misgendered. The nation saw a record 57 confirmed violent deaths among this population last year.

The “Death Penalty” of Child Welfare: In Six Months or Less, Some Parents Lose Their Kids Forever
Twenty-five years ago, Congress passed a law aimed at speeding up adoptions of children languishing in foster care. In the process, it destroyed hundreds of thousands of families through the termination of parental rights. CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In the months after a West Virginia court permanently took away their right to parent their daughters this past April, Jackie Snodgrass and her husband were left in a quiet house. The kids’ rooms remained untouched. The same dolls and stuffed animals were arranged on their younger daughter’s bed. The same clothes in the closets, becoming outgrown. The same photos on the walls, outdated.
The court had denied a final visit — despite the children continually saying they missed their mother — so the parents never got to say goodbye to them in person. Snodgrass worried about them constantly, especially her older daughter, who has diabetes. An app pinged her intermittently with updates on her child’s blood sugar. Occasionally, it would dip too low or spike too high.
“What if something happens to her?” Snodgrass said. “And if it does, I’m not going to be allowed to be there.”
Once considered a last resort reserved for parents who abandon their children, the involuntary and permanent termination of parental rights now hangs over every mother and father accused of any form of abuse or neglect — including allegations of nonviolent behavior like drug use or truancy, the two central parenting issues in the Snodgrasses’ case. Known in the legal world as the “death penalty” of child welfare, it can happen in a matter of months.
No state terminates parental rights more frequently or faster than West Virginia, according to a ProPublica and NBC News analysis. One in 50 children here experienced the severing of their relationships with both of their parents from 2015 to 2019, the last full year of federal child welfare data available before the pandemic. For most of them, it occurred within 11 months of being removed from their home for the first time. In the Snodgrasses’ case, it took only five months.

This story is a collaboration between New York magazine and ProPublica.
By the time Karl Ashanti neared his office in the New York City Law Department’s headquarters in March 2018, the police were shutting down Park Place. Ice had fallen from the buildings above, so an officer had cordoned off the area. Ashanti flashed his work ID and the cop let him through. Then, about two-thirds of the way down the block, he ran into a second officer. “Turn around now,” John Shapiro barked. “I said now.”
Ashanti stiffened. The two men were about the same size, each around 6 feet tall and 240 pounds. Shapiro was in his blue New York Police Department uniform. Ashanti, a city lawyer, wasn’t due in court that day and had dressed casually in dark slacks, a button-down, an overcoat and a winter hat. The two had never met before, but there was something about Shapiro’s brusque demeanor that Ashanti recognized.
For 11 years, Ashanti had defended NYPD officers against lawsuits alleging civil-rights violations in federal court. He was a senior litigator in a little-known Law Department unit that exclusively handles such cases, the Special Federal Litigation Division, known simply as Special Fed. As a Black man who’d grown up in Jamaica, Queens, Ashanti thought he brought valuable perspective to the work. He’d seen how Black people, and Black men in particular, could, through no fault of their own, be targeted by prejudiced men in uniform. Still, Ashanti took pride in his legal skills and had come to embrace the combative approach that Special Fed typically took in fighting claims of police abuse, even in the face of compelling evidence that police behavior violated the constitutional rights of the people they had sworn to protect. On Park Place, Ashanti told Shapiro, who is white, that he was trying to get to his office. Shapiro insisted he go back the way he came. Ashanti moved between two parked cars to cross the street and Shapiro hustled to cut off his path, repeating his order. The two men faced each other in the middle of the road. Shapiro tapped Ashanti on his shoulder. Ashanti backpedaled and asked to speak to a supervisor.
