My heart has been heavy since I received news on Easter Sunday. Bob Sinclair, owner of Waterloo Media (KLBJ 93.7) and 7 other stations in the group, passed away. Let me be clear, there would not be LA Lloyd or any radio career whatsoever if it wasn't for this man. Bob hired me in October 1993 as the night jock for 96X on a station we launched in Norfolk/Virginia Beach. 2 years later, Bob said, Lloyd you and Sara Trexler are going to Austin... and I've been here since 1995. Through the years, I've worked with properties he's owned and other companies as well. In 2013, I came full circle and got to work with Bob again as Program Director of KLBJ-FM. Eventually Bob became 100% owner of all 8 radio stations under the Waterloo Media name.
This photo is 30 years old. It was a night at the original Backyard in Austin with John Prine opening for Willie Nelson. I'm not sure whose idea it was for Bob to go on stage before the bands began. But it was recommended for him to introduce himself as a new business owner in Austin and thanking the crowd for welcoming him and his 2 stations in this market. Bob asked me to come on stage with him and I was happy to do so. The funny thing was Bob mentioning how the backstage area definitely "had a Willie fragrance." Also, he wanted me to remind him of who he was introducing as the opening act. Being the playful type, I kept telling Bob "it's John Prine...don't screw it up and say John Prune." He was getting aggravated at me for messing with him. Needless to say, he went on stage and did a great job. I'm so glad someone captured this moment of time of me with the man who saved me and made my radio career what it is today. I may look like I'm supporting him in the photo, but he supported me 1000 times more. Thanks Bob. I sure am gonna miss seeing you in the radio station and the calls from you where I had no idea what you were gonna hit me with. :) You were One Of A Kind!
