Gen Z Is Opting Out of Alcohol Culture

Here's why:
1. A Cultural Shift Is Happening
Gen Z is drinking less than any previous generation. Many are turning down alcohol not because of addiction, but because they see no upside to drinking. It’s not fun, it’s expensive, and it doesn’t align with their wellness goals.

2. Cancer Warnings + Wellness
The U.S. Surgeon General recently pushed for cancer warnings on alcohol. But for Gen Z, it’s not shocking, it confirms what they already feel: alcohol isn’t worth the long-term damage.

3. Alcohol-Free Fun Is on the Rise
Instead of bars, Gen Zers are turning to book clubs, pottery studios, art cafés, and board game venues. For them, connection matters more than cocktails.

4. The Non-Alcoholic Economy Is Booming
The non-alcoholic market hit $13 billion, with Gen Z leading demand. Even major alcohol companies (like Heineken) are shifting portfolios, and celebs like Tom Holland are launching their own alcohol-free products.

5. It’s About Control, Not Deprivation
Gen Z isn't rejecting alcohol out of fear or shame. They're embracing alternatives because they want clarity, energy, and meaningful connection.

A surreal “pinch me” moment.

Times Square, New York City. 2025.

I’m standing beneath a billboard featuring me and my book, Clear.

Next to me is my friend of 10 years — and Clear co-author — - and we’re soaking it all in.

I felt nostalgic.

My mind flashed back to the early 1980s, growing up in Brisbane, Australia…

Lying on my parents’ green carpet, glued to our old Rank Arena TV, watching U.S. shows like Diff’rent Strokes and Charles in Charge, and movies like Superman.

New York felt gritty, thrilling, and larger than life - the epitome of “making it.”

So to find myself here, four decades later, nearly 50 years old, staring up at my own face on a billboard in Times Square…

Promoting a book that helps people quit drinking - how could anyone have dreamed that up?

I’m incredibly grateful to share this moment with Daniel, editor at .co , who has supported me so generously over the years.

Together, we’re proud of Clear - a book that helps high achievers break free from alcohol using neuroscience, not willpower, AA, or rehab.

(Fun fact: the audiobook is currently outselling the hardcover 3-to-1.)

You can find it on Amazon or at alcoholfreelifestyle.com/clear.

For years, it was widely believed that moderate alcohol intake, especially red wine, was a key to heart health. However, as the headline indicates, major health bodies like the American Heart Association (AHA) are now clarifying that this is a myth. So, why the change? Scientists now understand that previous studies suggesting a benefit were largely observational and couldn't establish a true cause-and-effect link. The protective effects were likely due to other confounding factors.

A new scientific statement from the AHA (June 2025) reinforces that while heavy drinking is clearly harmful, the benefits of light-to-moderate drinking are unproven and the risks may outweigh them. For instance, alcohol can increase blood pressure and the risk of atrial fibrillation at any level. Organizations like the World Heart Federation go further, stating that no amount of alcohol is safe for the heart. Any perceived benefit from antioxidants like resveratrol in wine is minimal compared to the risks of alcohol itself; these antioxidants can be obtained from other sources like grapes, blueberries, and peanuts without the associated harms.

Help debunk this persistent health myth. Share this crucial information with someone you care about 🙏🏻

Large-scale studies have demonstrated a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and reduced brain volume. For example, a 2022 study in Nature Communications analyzing over 36,000 adults found significant negative associations between alcohol intake and the brain's gray and white matter.

The idea that there is no completely "safe" level of consumption for brain health was reinforced by a 30-year study in The BMJ, which found that even moderate drinking was associated with atrophy (shrinkage) in the hippocampus, a key region for memory. This research shows a clear dose-dependent relationship, the risk increases with intake, but it begins at levels widely considered "moderate".

Your body has a built-in defense system against poison. What happens when you drink it willingly?

Recognizing this truth is incredibly liberating. It changes the question from "Why shouldn't I drink?" to "Why would I ever choose to do that to my body?" This mindset shift is the key to effortlessly choosing health and vitality.

A study of over 16,000 men revealed a shocking truth that half of heavy drinkers (15+ drinks per week) suffer from s***matogenic arrest, complete shutdown of s***m production.

Their testicles literally shrink. Their testosterone crashes. Their fertility disappears. What they thought was "networking" and "deal celebration" was actually systematically destroying their reproductive capacity.

The damage starts immediately.

Research shows testosterone drops within 30 minutes of drinking, and even healthy men reach heavy-drinker hormone levels in just one month of daily consumption.

Alcohol attacks all three glands responsible for testosterone production: your hypothalamus, pituitary, and te**es.
