Governor Greg Abbott has paid to bus "school choice" advocates from across the state to the Texas Capitol. In messages posted by Texas Insider Scott Braddock, Abbott paid for buses to pick up the advocates and lodging expenses. These advocates participated in a rally outside the Capitol yesterday with the Governor and various other politicians. One observer estimated around 200 people in attendance at the rally.

Governor Greg Abbott today outlined his priority to secure education freedom for all Texans at Parent Empowerment Day at the Texas Capitol in Austin. This week the Senate Committee on Education will hear proposals on some of the most contentious issues of the legislative session. Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) will be introducing Senate Bill (S.B.) 8 to establish education savings account (E.S.A.s) programs (school vouchers). Certain public school advocates say if passed, this legislation would drain money from public schools and essentially create education coupons for wealthy families. On the other hand, supporters of the legislation, like the Texas Public Policy Foundation, say that E.S.A.s allow parents to meet their child's educational needs when the "education was not the quality they expected, or it wasn't aligned with their family values."https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/history.aspx?LegSess=88R&Bill=SB8

Governor Greg Abbott today announced the Texas Music Office (TMO) and the City of Texarkana will co-host a Music Friendly Texas Community workshop on Monday, March 20.   “Music is key to the Texas brand and to our local economies,” said Governor Abbott. “I thank the Texas Music Office for hel...

The legislature has officially finished bill filing for the 88th session. This year they shattered records and filed the most bills in Texas history.
Across the last two days of bill filing, over 1600 pieces of legislation were filed. We are still processing much of the new legislation, but now there's a clearer picture of each chamber's priority bills. In total, 7,865 bills were filed, breaking the record by 446.

Almost 60 schools districts across Texas have now switched to four-day schools weeks, typically to try and prevent teacher turnover. Crosby ISD is the largest school district to adopt the policy, just outside of Houston. Crosby serves almost 6,500 students and approved the switch in a February 27th school board meeting. Crosby ISD Superintendent Paula Patterson said, "Our why is simple and straightforward. We want to find, recruit and retain the best teachers in the state in the classrooms for our students." Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath is not sold on the idea, though, as while testifying in a state Senate Education Committee meeting, Morath said the shift "is harmful for student achievement on balance."
